4x4 not working on f350
Anybody know about the 4x4 electricals ? the light on the dash won't come on, and I can't hear the thump from the transfer with it running or with it off and just turning the key on. So where do I start ? I asked the same question on diesel stop forum with no answers .

You would think those guys would know. I don't have a clue..
Last resort, you can take it to the Ford dealership.

Re: 4x4 not working on f350
I am assuming you have the little knob you turn and not the manual shifter. We had several of those knobs / switches go out on our company trucks a few years back. They were all under warranty still and the dealer just put new switches in.

Re: 4x4 not working on f350
thanks for the link beartoo, I'll check the wires and connections.
Moo, I'm hoping its just the connections that need reattached or cleaning and not the switch replaced.
I know I need some new vacuum lines. when we redid the hub this weekend I noticed they were pretty much gone. I always manually locked them in anyway.

Re: 4x4 not working on f350
I'm not a Ford guy but I did have this problem with a 2000 model Chevy several years ago.
It was a simple vacuum switch. I'm thinking it was located down on the transfer case. I remember it was only $30 or $40 and a simple fix.
Hopefully yours is this simple.
Just thought of something....The bearing problem you mentioned earlier? This problem present itself after the bearing replacement?

Sounds electrical. If it was a vacum problem (assuming you have ESOF) everything would appear normal, but the front wheels would not be powered. Since your light is not coming on, it sounds electrical; switch would be a good place to start.

before the replacement. I'm pretty sure its gonna be in the connection or switch. Just gotta get under there and see.

Phillip:
Mine did the same thing about 6 months ago. When you first cut the Key switch on with out starting the truck can you hear the Vacum pump run. If not then the Vacum pump will more than likley need to be replaced. The same vacum pump controls the heater Controls settings

Re: 4x4 not working on f350
Looking up at the transfer case , the harness has two connections.
one to the electric motor, and one that connects on the back of the plate that the elec motor mounts to.
The connector on the back was hanging down and not connected.
I tried pushing it back on but its like the little latch is broken.
It will stay on there , and I tried starting the truck and seeing if it would go in 4x4 but still not working. I gotta get someone to watch it while I hold it on tight , but I guess thats my main problem.

Re: 4x4 not working on f350
Phil,
I sent you an email with some PDFs.
Don't forget to check fuses.
The connector on the back is the feedback (contact plates) so it knows what gear the case is in. All is processed in the GEM.
I have a fancy lever on the floor for my 4x4 engagement. I ordered it old school.
