Tire Pressure????

Post by bsmall2800 on 12/16/2009, 7:13 pm

This question might have been answered already, but I did a search and didn't see anything.
My question is this the label on the side of my Cat indicates max tire pressure 65PSI. However, the tire sidewalls on the Cat says 80PSI. So which do I go with 65 or 80 PSI????

The sticker on the Cat is probably aimed at "D" tires which would be 65#. The "E" tires take 80#. The tire tells you the max pressure, which in my opinion is where they should be kept all the time.

That would indicate to me that either you have a higher rated tire than you were supposed to, or the wrong sticker. I would inflate to the max pressure on the tire sidewall. Can't go wrong doing that.

Sounds like a plan then, I will stick with 80PSI.

Make sure that your rims will handle the higher pressure. Rims are pressure rated also.

Along that note, does anybody know what the original white steel wheels are rated for?

I don't know what the tire pressure rating is for the original wheels. We had a flat while sitting in a campground, and when a new tire was put on the rim, there was a leak because of a crack. We replaced the rim. Then it happened again with another rim (fortunately we were in another campground). That's when we replaced all of the rims.

I recommend replacing the rims.

On a trailer, I would agree that keeping the max pressure is good practice no matter what the load rating. However, the practice for truck tires is a little different. The max pressure for E rated tires is 80, but the min is 65.

The minimum and maximum tire pressure depends upon the load. I keep my E rated front truck tires at 70 psi which corresponds to the load of the engine, front-end and weight of passengers. I keep the rear tires at 70 psi unless I'm towing, then I increase to 80 psi which accomodates the kingpin load of the trailer.

Running bobtail, the ride is too rough with the rears at 80 psi which indicates that the tires are over inflated. Also, if the tires are over inflated, they will not wear correctly.

Again, JMHO

I run my lt285/75r16 E rated tires @ 55-60 psi running empty. They are rated at 3750# at 80psi. At 56 psi that still 3000# rating per tire per the charts. I go to 65 on the front and 70 on the rear when towing season comes. The wear and ride is bad when you run it too high and no load.
.
On the WC, I run 65psi all the time since they are D rated.

I have the original steel rims from Forest River, they are JJ and can hold a max PSI of 65. I have E range tires and I keep them at 65.

You got the optional 16" load range E tires by the sounds of it but the wrong VIN and tire load label on the trailer. I had this problem and Forrest River sent my dealer new VIN and Tire load labels to correct their bad and dangous oversite. Also my trailer was shipped with a 15" spare that had to be swapped out. Lucky the dealer noticed the incorrect lables and spare before I even got there. I run 75 to 80 lbs in my WC tires depending on my mood.

My VIN tag is wrong too. I asked FR to reissue it and they sent me a new one with the same info. I gave up. I can't figure out why it is so hard to do things right the first time.

While you are checking the tire pressure be sure you have the correct valve stems. I keep my trailer tires at the psi stated on the tire and have replaced all the valve stems. The valve stems that came with the trailer were not rated for the maximum air pressure indicated on the tire. I went to a tire dealer that works on truck tires and they helped me get the proper valve stems. Actually they are identical to the ones on my 2500 GMC truck and that is rated at 80 psi. I understand that a lot of tire problems are caused by faulty valve stems. Just something to keep in mind. I would definitely change the valve stems to a higher rated stem.

Re: Tire Pressure????

My buddy runs a Firestone. According to him, you should always keep your tires inflated according to the vehicle sticker, not the sidewall of the tire. The sidewall only tells you what the tire is built to handle. According to him, the vehicle is tested for role over and other things and the tire pressures are adjusted according to this testing. That is what happened in the ford issues a few years ago with the Explorers. He said that the only way Ford could pass the roll over tests in the vehicle was to lower the tire pressure. This unfortunately caused the tires to heat up and fail prematurely. He says to always run the tires at what the vehicle sticker says.

Now your sticker being incorrect is a totally different issue. That is the manufactures fault, much like Ford with the Explorers. I run every tire on all my vehicles at what the vehicle says, not what the tire manufacture says that tire can handle in a different set up.

Just my 2c

Just for grins and maybe add some confusion. I had the same question about my factory white 15 inch rims. I call FR and spoke to Ron Batts. He gave me the name of their wheel vendor. I called them, gave them the info for my trailer and they told me the wheels are rated to 75psi. I keep my E Maxxis tires between 70-72lbs to allow for heat build up when we start rolling.

Ok, I have 15" JJ white rims, PSI limit 65# What advantage if any to go from D to E rated tires, if the rims are only good for 65 PSI?

Probably none if you don't get ones rated for 80psi
