Maxxis Tires
We've decided that we should have looked into our choice of tires a bit more thoroughly before buying the Carlisles. We'd like some opinions about Maxxis. We'd be sticking with the 15" since we invested quite a bit in our spiffy aluminum rims last spring.

Re: Maxxis Tires
I have read all over the net that Maxxis tires were the best. I was set to get some myself.
Last week I had to replace the tires on my DW's car. While I waited for the install I started talking to the sales dude about ST tires. Now I know that Discount Tire carried Maxxis so I wanted to get prices. He told me that they no longer carried them because he had so much trouble with them. Cracking sidewalls and flats, etc. He recommended Carlisle. I left scratching my head. I believe that he had them in stock and wanted to sell them. He did mention he could get Maxxis if I really wanted them.
My head is still spinning over which tires are the best. There are Duro's on my Wildcat now, no problems so far, but i don't want to press my luck.

I put Denman's (load range E) on mine, made in Mexico, about a year ago. I've put 3,000 miles on them so far. I got the Denman Express Radial, but I think that they call them Denman Cargo Carrier now.

Re: Maxxis Tires
John,
We bought our Carlisles about a year ago.... and the wheels last May. We had a blowout on I-8 in the FL panhandle. We have the lifetime guaranty on the tires, and we got the blown tire replaced at Discount Tires for free - we bought the lifetime guaranty for the new tire - $15. Our trailer is at a dealer's now - they just finished repairing the damage the blowout caused. The guy called this afternoon and said there was a big bubble in the tire that was on the same side as the one that blew. Scruffy drove over there and got the bubble tire, took it to Discount Tire and express his dissatisfaction. Discount Tires will give us credit for the Carlisles to go towards Maxxis.
Now I'm really wondering what's going on. Scruffy will be very interested to see the replies.
Thanks.

This may a be a dumb question, but why do you think that the ST225/75R15 in 10 ply is 1 pound lighter than the same size in 8 ply????

I would think that it was a misprint. I too put on Denman in May. Have about 8000 miles on them. The dealer I got them from said that they are the tire of choice down here for off-roaders because of the way that they hold up. We shall see.

Re: Maxxis Tires
I have the Maxxis and they have made every trip on our Cat. My rough guess is around 15-20K miles. This past trip down to Disney, we had a bubble show up on the sidewall of one of them. I will say that earlier this summer, I noticed that there were lots of little cracks at the edge of the tread where it meets the sidewall. Took it to the tire shop and he looked at them and said not a problem. To me it seems like the cap is starting to break loose, but I am not a professional. Our RV dealer put them on when we bought it and said they have the best luck with them. I constantly drive at 70 -75 MPH and they have held up good for me.
I want to go back with a new set this winter, but I am debating going to a 16". The 10 ply Maxxis in the 15" don't give you much more of a weight rating than the 8 plys.

Re: Maxxis Tires
I got 15 inch E rated Maxxis at Discount Tire in Arlington. They had to get them shipped to them from another store. I looked at them before they put them on to be sure they were "new". All were less than a year from manufacture date. Added metal valve stems at time.
Put them on in April 08. No issues whatsoever.

Re: Maxxis Tires
Our Maxxis tires were installed yesterday. We already had the metal valve stems. Three Carlisles were pro-rated for the year that we've had them. We got full credit for the fourth, since we had just purchased it. We also got the free replacement warranty on all of the tires. Our total cost was $170. We're happy. Now, don't anyone tell us we could have done better - don't want to hear that. And no horror stories about Maxxis tires.
Now it's time to start loading the Cat for our next trip.

Re: Maxxis Tires
If I have a Wildcat 24RL, do I need anything other than a D rated tire. My rims are the white 15" and JJ, the E rate is up to 80# some PSI but my rims are 65#. I like steel rims, so unless there is some great advantage to up grading to a higher PSI steel rim, I can't see any reason to move up to Es. Am I correct?

I have a set of Maxxis E all so and I like them. I got them at America's tire, I ran over a 1/4 bolt by 4inches and had to get a new one. They had to order it and it took a week, I ask why and they said America's Tire no longer carries that brand but they can still get it. I was told Les Schwab tire has Maxxis tires know

Re: Maxxis Tires
I was at Camping World yesterday with a 12 Volt system charging problem. They said the converter was bad. They said it has a two years warranty and is covered and it won't cost me a dime
. But they said they must send in the old converter in order to get a new on from the converter maker (which sounds strange). I am planning a trip shortly and they recommended just using a battery charger to keep the battery charged. I don,t have a problem with that because we always park at places with shore power.
My 5er is almost 2 years old now with Duro tires with about 10K miles on them and they still look good. We were talking tires and the service guy suggested Goodyear Marathon or Maxxis tires. He said Duro tires are "an accident waiting to happen". He wasn't trying to sell me tires because at that store they don't do tires.
Just food for thought. What do you think?

but remember that all of your lights, central heat, etc. are 12-volt and I think that the converter needs to be in the circuit for them to work.

Re: Maxxis Tires
Tater,
I did sooooo much research on replacement tires, that I was burnout. After having the original tires blowout, I went with the Maxxis. I also have the 15" wheel. So far, I am glad I chose them. But, I only have 2000 miles on them. I went with the 10 ply. It's a shame that there is not a single trailer tire out there that is recommended. I guess that's what happens when we ship all of our jobs overseas. Keep checking on comments and don't get in a hurry. But, I feel that I made a good decision. Just wish I had 16" wheels.
Merry Christmas.

Re: Maxxis Tires
Another happy Maxxis customer here. I replaced the factory TowMax 15" Load Range D (after 3 seasons) with a Maxxis 15" Load Range E. One full season of towing. Very happy. I am using metal valve stems, new alloy wheels and had everything balanced.

Re: Maxxis Tires
Can those who switched to the load range E tires share what wheels they got to handle the higher tire pressure? We need new tires this year and I'm seriously considering the Maxxis 15 Es, but haven't come up with an aluminum wheel to go along with the new tires.
I understand it's better to get cast aluminum wheels. For those in the know, what's the benefit?

I think if I was going to upgrade to new wheels, I would just go all the way and get 16" wheels and tires right away for even more of a load benefit.

If you like to have blowouts, buy Carlisles. Their a sure thing to fail. Even worse, you also have to repair the wheel well. Don.....

Sounds like you had a bad experience similar to ours.
The cost of our trailer repairs came to $1,800+. Fortunately, our insurance covered it - we had to pay $500 deductible. We're glad we had the insurance.
After the blowout happened, and before we got into any rain, Scruffy bought a small reinforced plastic tarp and cut it to size. Then he stapled and taped it inside the wheel well. The insurance adjuster was impressed.

Re: Maxxis Tires
This is a link to the wheels I purchased for my new Maxxis about a year ago. http://gearworks.gearworksracing.com/sendelt0315x6machinedclearcoated.aspx
I was hoping to have gone to 16" wheels, but I "had" a clearance issue with the slide room mechanism which had me concerned about not having enough space with the bigger tires/wheels and the cross shaft for the slide room. Ironically, even sticking with the 15" tires and wheels I ended up having a problem with clearance (Forest River ended up solving the problem for me - posted in this link: http://www.wildcatcamperforum.com/maintenance-repairs-trouble-shooting-service-warranty-f12/tire-and-wheel-clearance-question-t1399.htm
All in all, I am thrilled with the Sendel wheels and Maxxis tires. The rig looks great.
