16" tires

Post by moo2613 on 12/11/2009, 3:08 am

Okay, I need some input. I currently have the 225-75-15D tires on my Cat. Looking at going to a 235-80-16E. The new tires would be 1.3" higher which would help level my camper and may even allow me to drop the kingpin a notch giving me more truck clearance.

Question #1 - anybody have this size tire and using the Bal roto chocks? Will they still fit between the tires? I do not see any issue with clearance of the hydraulics on the slide.

Question #2 - Dealer has quoted me $757 with steel rims out the door. I like most would rather have nice shinny aluminum wheels, but cost constraints aren't going to allow it. The tires are an off brand by the name of highland or something like that. Dealer said they are as good or better than Maxxis (which I currently have and really like). Does this sound like a reasonable price or should I keep shopping? This price is for 4 tires, I will keep one of the 15" as a spare.

Any thoughts are welcome, thank you.

I have the factory 16" wheels and use the Bal X-chock. There is only about 2"-3" between the tires.

I will have to look when I get home, sorry I don't know off the top of my head. I will also get a more accurate spacing distance between the two tires

There are a number of folks that have the 16 inch tires from the factory, can some of you all post what size tires you have? and the space between them.

ST235/80r16 on mine from the factory. I have slightly less than 2" between them. I had to buy the BAL X-chock to get it to work. The old BAL chock from my previous trailer wouldn't fit .

I put on 16" rims and 235's, both from Discount Tire, this summer. No regrets. I am still able to use standard BAL chocks.
Check out my gallery for pics.
Yes, they are made in China.

I should add that the distance between my axles measured more than what others have stated by an inch or two so that helped.
The measurement escapes me.

I bought from them (15" LRE on Aluminum Wheels). Good customer service and fast shipping.

Wow, did I space out. I said I would get back with the tire size on Friday, but I totaly forgot. Sorry about that. The tires are ST235/80R16 load range E. The name on them is Power Touring Trail Express (if that means anything). Probably Chinese. As far as space between the factory 16", it's about 2" maybe 2.25"

I have the factory GreenBall Towmaster IIs Load Range D. Side wall reads 3250# per tire @ 65psi. Almost 4 years and 10-15k miles and no issues.
