rds combo toolbox & fuel tank

Just looking for some advice on the fuel line on a gravity feed tank into the stock filler hose. Should the line be straight from tank to filler hose or a drip loop in the line? through the side of bed ,or straight down through the floor of the bed. Any advice ? Thanks All

I have a tidy tank with line to the stock filler hose. However I have a small 12vdc $35 inline fuel pump as well. It doesn't give a high volumn but it is faster than gravity feed, especially when the tank is near empty. Have it energized by plugging it into trailer plug-in on park lights. Still have a gate valve to shut fuel to pump since pump is not positive shut-off. Have used it for several years. You still need to watch your gauge for full because it will run over if left unattended. One note. On my 01 Ram Diesel when filling open up your filler cap. Sometimes positive pressure in tank, then fuelling takes quite a bit longer. My normal time to fill my 25 gal tank is about 45 minutes.

I am in the process of pulling the trigger on one of these set ups as well. My 08 2500HD only has a 26 gallon tank which makes me look for fuel every 180-190 miles. I am looking at the RDS combo box with 51 gallon tank and 10" deep tool box from northern tool. It seems that the gravity feed system takes quite a while to work so I am planning on using a small electric pump and a toggle switch mounted in the cab.

I have one of these, works real well, and all I have to do is flick a toggle on the dash to change tanks. The vehicle fuel gauge also gets wired in, so it takes over when the toggle is switched.

Thanks for the link Tom. That company makes some nice combo's. I have been trying to find some options on different sizes. Is your fill neck inside or outside the lid? And the big question; does it leak around the cap and make a mess or does yours seal good?

I'm thinking of adding extra fuel storage as well. I can't decide between an auxillary tank in the bed or a larger replacement tank. Both have their obvious advantages and disadvantages.

Only problem apparently they wont ship this tank and provide their own installation. So that means I will have to take a short trip to southern Ca. to get it done the price is not too bad either....

I put in the Titan fuel tank. http://www.titanfueltanks.com/default.htm It gives me 52 gal without any extra space taken up in the bed. It fits well under the truck and hangs down very little. If you call them, they will custom make any size/combo you need.

My fill neck is inside and it does not leak there....

If I fill it up too much, as the day's temperature goes up, it leaks out the overflow and onto the ground. But, If I stop at the first or 2nd click off, then its fine. They are made out of aluminum, so no corrosion. The hardest part of installation was mounting the electric switch. You have to drill 2 holes in the frame, and then pass the bolts through these holes and thread into the body of the switch. I had a hard time getting the holes to align.

Also, if you own a Ford, its been found that if the fuel gauge does not move after 200 miles, the check engine lite comes on thinking something is wrong. I've had this happen a few times, before I figured out what was going on. Ford supposedly has a fix for it, and it was suppose to have been done to mine, but it still does it. So I bought the Edge Insight to monitor my temperatures, and I can reset the check engine lite now.

I do have the installation instructions of you would like to see them.

The Chevrolet will do something similar. The fuel gauge will go to empty if it doesn't move for a while and won't correct until the truck is shut off. To fix this I plan on using a solenoid valve that can be operated from in the cab so that when the fuel level reaches about 1/3 remaining I can flip the switch and allow the gravity feed to replenish the tank. This way the needle keeps working as normal.

I did the Transferflow. I don't live that far from them so I had Transferflow put the tank on. I have a short bed and did not want to use up the bed for a tank. I like the tank till I fill it up. I have a V10 so It eats up the gas hehehe

I ordered a 51 gallon RDS tool box/ fuel tank combo from Northern Tool yesterday. I plan on installing a 12v transfer pump with a cab actuated switch and a fuel filter. I will post pictures when I get it installed in a few weeks.

We have the 74 gallon auxiliary fuel tank/ tool box. I decided to buy the one that is not plumbed to the trucks system, so I could remove the tank easily when I need the full bed size. It has a 12 volt pump and hose with nozzle. Our stock tank is 38 gallons, so we now have over 100 gallons of usable fuel. There are advantages and disadvantages to our system compared to a system that is plumbed to the main tank.

I got my 51 gallon RDS tool box/fuel tank combo installed on Tuesday. No leaks so far and I will be running with the valve open today to check for overflow problems before our trip this weekend. I have my fingers crossed that I will be able to run with the valve open Installation was easy and the worst part was splicing the fuel fill.

I have the RDS 60gal Toolbox combo for about 2 1/2 year now. I got it with the fill neck over flow check. I set it up on a solenoid valve to cut it off when not in use. I did have some leak on the vent line when i top off the tank, so I just hook a hose to it & loop it under the bed rail above the tank. I have a 05 f-350 SP SD, have not had the overflow OR fuel gauge problem.

For those of you that have them, how do you deal with you payload weight?

If a gallon of diesel weighs in a 7+ lbs/gal a sixty gallon aux tank would weigh in at 420 lbs of fuel plus the weight of the tank when full. The payload for our trucks is calculated using a full tank of fuel plus 1 passenger.

Seems like alot of weight on the rear axle when you include the pin weight of the trailer.

I have a DODGE, so no weight problems for me

Mine holds 45 - 50 gallons.

I don't know about THOSE OTHER vehicles.

My rear GAWR 7000# with SRW & crewcab 4x4. NO problem here with the OTHER Vehicle.
