Roof crack

Post by f150k on 11/1/2009, 2:07 pm

We have a 2007 24RL, and have a small crack in the roof. It is located up front where the roof fabric and the trim for the front cap meet. What should I use to repair it, I thought about using a white butyl rubber caulk? Any suggestions?

Ken,

Even though I'm not sure how you'd handle repairing a crack vs a tear or rip, my concern for you is... why do you have a crack to repair? Cracks usually mean a structural failure.

It is more of a small rip in the fabric, maybe 1 inch long.

If that's all it is, then you can use this...

Dicor is a common roof product.

TC, thanks, only the rip is right next to the trim that finish off the joint between the front cap and the fabric roof. The trim must cover the joint, not sure I want to remove the trim. There is some type of sealant around all the vents, rack and AC, looks something like putty. Would that work to seal the rip?

Ken,

There is a brushable product that comes in a quart can and available at CW and many well stocked RV dealers. It is made especially for EPDM rooves such as are on our RV's. I've used it on a number of occasions to reseal the caulking at the roof seams. It works well, is durable and flows into the little valleys and cracks easily.

Luck,

Eternabond tape may work well on the rip. It is very easy to put on and it seems to last forever. You have to prep the area first and use a roller to press it on good, but it will hold up very well. It is white just like the roof and comes in small sections about 4-6" wide by a foot or you can get a roll of it (60') but it gets expensive.

I would probably use some Dicor sealant. If you can squirt some under the rubber roof, then push it down, then fill the area around the tear.

While your up there, check all the caulk joints too, I had some caulk crack around the TV antenna.

Ansd get the white caulk, not the dove....

I went with Dicor lap sealant 501 LSW self leveling. Thanks for all the help.
