Diesel Fuel Additives

Diesel Fuel Additives
I was asking my Ford dealer today about fuel additives and he was
trying to sell me Summit Diesel Conditioner from Well-Worth. I was
surprised since this was not a Motorcraft product.
Has anyone heard of or used this product? What would your thoughts be about this?

Re: Diesel Fuel Additives
I was having trouble with th EGR Valve plugging up. It plugged up 3 times in less than 1500 miles. My
Dealer called the
Tech Line and they said remove the EGR valve then start up my truck and let it blow out the carbon and then replace the EGR Valve and start using the
Brand Diesel Conditioner. Add about 2ozs every time I fill up. That has been 25,000 miles ago. I have had no problems yet.

Re: Diesel Fuel Additives
I've been using Diesel Kleen from WalMart since I bought the truck in '04. In the winter I use the product in the white bottle cause it has an anti-gelling additive (16ou every other tankfull). That's important here in NH where temps can hit -20*F. The rest of the year I use the product in the silver bottle.
As I've researched the issue, the lubricity of the ULSD fuel that we're now forced to use is not what it was with the LSD fuel. The additives increase lubricity which in turn keeps both the fuel pump and the injectors well lubricated. Doesn't matter whether its a Cummins, PowerStroke or Duramax; the principal is the same. On Turbodieselregister.com (a site like this one for Cummins owners), some of the guys are adding 2-stroke oil to their tanks to keep the lubricity of the fuel up.
Also, the additive increases the Cetane rating of the fuel in use (like Octane rating for gasoline) which by my hand reckoned measurements has increased the mpg that I get out of the Cummins.
Keep on truckin'

I've been using the Tech 200 Walmart brand 2 stroke oil you just want the one that says tc-w3 on the bottle its alot cheaper than the diesel additives and works just as well. 125,000 miles still running strong

Ran my first PS 7.3 180k (probably still running somewhere), my second PS 7.3 is at 120k and counting, and a PS 6.0 is at 155k and counting. That's a total of about 455k miles and I have never used any additives.

Ditto w/ Scott. I used probably two bottles when the dealer tossed them in after some warranty work when it was a baby. Haven't used them since. That was 8 years ago.

Re: Diesel Fuel Additives
I also use the Diesel Kleen from Wally World, and ever so often I will add a quart of straight 30W motor oil to a tank of fuel. I was told by a head mechanic of a large fleet of diesel vehicles that this would prevent injector problems. I had one injector fail in 180K miles, so there may be something to it. And some people use a quart of tranny fluid in the same manner

Re: Diesel Fuel Additives
I just got back on a 1100 mile trip and notices that I was only getting 9.8 MPG. The other trips was 11.9 so I was thinking is it time to get the injectors cleaned? Any advice welcome.

Re: Diesel Fuel Additives
In order to help the Turbo stay clean a local repair shop, who use to be a Ford Dealership service location, has me put STP fuel injection cleaner in my tank. About every 4 to 6th fill up. Helps.

I use Stanadyne performance or lubricity formula. Stanadyne is the only additive approved by GM for the newer trucks that have the particulate filter. There is a comparison report that shows that some brands have zero effect while others have a negative effect on performance. I'll see if I can dig it up and post it.

I use Stanadyne in between 2. Not every tank but close.

I was worried about adding anything for fear of screwing with the darn DPF on my 08 Duramax. Did you see any mileage increases using the stanadyne?

Re: Diesel Fuel Additives
I only started using it back in November and don't use the truck much over the winter so I honestly don't know at this point. I just made a 110 mile trip last weekend hauling a utility trailer with a golf cart in it. I averaged 15.1 mpg this time and last year on the same exact trip I only averaged 13.7 ( based on DIC which is about 1 mpg better than hand calculation ). I only have 8,500 miles on the truck so the better mileage could also be attributed to break in or most likely a combination of both. Driving solo I have also seen an improvement since last fall. I started using it mainly to avoid fuel problems since the truck sits a good bit over the winter and also for the extra lubrication that the ULSD fuel lacks. Your manual states not to use additives or if you must you should consult your dealer so that is what I did. I spoke to the service manager where I purchased the truck and they sell their own own GM brand for about four times what you can purchase it for elsewhere. It is made by Stanadyne ( see email below ). He was incorrect in stating that it should be in the owners manual. It is not.

This is Jeremy Lookenbill from Jones GMC. There is 1 diesel fuel additive that GM approves. It is produced by Standedyne and comes in a GM Vehicle Care bottle. We stock the conditioner as GM calls it. The part # is 88861009, we sell it for $12.24 per bottle. Each bottle treats up to 30 gallons of fuel. This product information should also be available under the fuel section of your vehicles owners manual for future reference.
Feel free to contact me with any other questions,
Jeremy Lookenbill

I notice Stanadyne does reduce my Fords mileage when I use. All the diesels I owned have had the same occurance.

Re: Diesel Fuel Additives
Keep in mind that my truck is new and I still have less than 5000 miles on the odometer so my experience is limited.
That said, I’ve taken the Wildcat out twice, one of the trips was a round trip tow of 1400 miles. I don’t know if fuel additives help keep the injectors clean. I don’t know they lower exhaust emissions. I don’t know if the additives increase the lubricity of the fuel. I am convinced though, that the fuel additives increase the MPG slightly. I’ve been using Diesel Kleen that I buy at WalMart and I believe that when I use the additive my fuel mileage increase by .5 to 1 MPG when towing. I believe it probably has something to do with the cetane boost provided by the additive.
Right or wrong, that’s my two cents worth on the subject of additives.
