Shower water check valve

Post by f150k on 10/2/2009, 4:09 am

Just found this on ModMyRV.com ( http://www.modmyrv.com/2009/04/12/rv-shower-hot-water-supply-check-valves ) This is to take the cold burst out of taking a shower in our RV. Looks good I may try to do this before winterizing.

I think someone here tried that and it didn't work. Hopefully they will chime in. I changed my shower head to one from Camco and the cold water rush was gone. Never figured out why it worked, it just did. My BIL also switched to that shower head and it worked for him also.
My best guess is that when you turn it off via the head, it really is off...no telltale dribble.

I installed the check valve; did not solve the problem. Several others got the same result. Might try the new shower head.

I get hot burst instead. I turn the hot on fully and adjust temp with the cold. Maybe that's why I get the hot burst?? Hot is better than cold!!

Question---isn't the vacuum breaker built into the faucet assembly supposed to prevent the hot/cold backfeed? Mine does the same thing, but not as bad as others. I actually swapped my shower head out to a push button nozzle such as you would find on a sink that is used to rinse dishes (I suppose). Works great at providing a "submarine" shower.

I was the one who first installed the back flow. I currently have 2, 1 on the feed from the hot water heater, and 1 for the hot water going to the outside shower.

And I still get the cold water blast.

I think that the problem is in the mixing valve. It seems that almost all the RV's out there use the same one, and almost everybody has the problem. The other variable is the incoming water pressure. Could it be that the higher the incoming pressure, the less cold blast you would get?

We did not have the cold blast on our other camper. Our other one is a hard side fold down ( or pop-up ) Aliner. The mixing valve looks about the same only it has a diverter for using it as a tub. We noticed it the most in Yellowstone ( Fishing Bridge) campground. They did tell us that they had uneven water pressure. Could have been that, but there seem to be a problem with others as well.
