On The Road Again - Part 4

Post by schrowang on 9/24/2009, 1:52 pm

Arrived in Moab at about 2:30 p.m. Gosh, Utah must be one of the most uninhabited placed in the U.S. Miles and miles of just miles and miles, interupted occaisionally by a town. Moab is 31 miles south of I-70 and that's 31 miles of nothing but high desert. Wow!

We were here to see Arches and Canyonlands NPs and to see what else we could do in the Moab area. We stayed for four nights.

Day 13 - Spent almost 5 hours exploring Arches NP. What landscape!!!!!!! The red and white sandstone is unbelievably beautiful, especially in the early morning light. We saw many rock formations along the way; the Three Gossips, Courthouse Tower, The Wall, Balanced Rock and a number of arches. The Arch that we like best was Double Arch. We were able to hike in about 1/2 mile to see this wonder and get a really nice shot of it. For scale, look at the bottom center of the pix and you'll see this little ant like human being looking up at the arches

Day 14 - This is the day that we chose to go to Canyonlands NP. It is as different from Arches as night from day. With Arches NP you're down in the canyons looking up. In Canyonlands you're up on the Colorado Plateau looking down. The Colorado and Green River Canyons meet here and divide the park into three distinct areas. The Island In The Sky (most visited) The Needles and the far western area that is only accessible on foot or by 4-wheeler.

This shot is of the Colorado River Gorge as seen from the top of the Colorado Plateau. The hazyness is from the fires in CA (I kid you not!)

Day 15 - We spent our last day in Moab doing a Hummer off-road tour of the Slickrock Trail. The DW is telling me it's time to eat so I'll post this and edit it with one more pix.

Later, gotta eat!

Back again after a nice dinner of butternut squash ravioli with a salad on the side. MmmmmMm!

So there we were in the back of nowhere when Steve our driver says, "How'd you like a shot of a Hummer on three wheels?" How could I resist? So I hiked up this tremendous boulder, about 30' and Steve obligingly put the Hummer up on three wheels. The DW was still in it, but after all the tips and slides and turns of the trip, this was a baby step. We really had a good time.

Yup, that's and H1 Hummer, up on three wheels. Great fun!

Tomorrow we're in Golden, CO seeing some friends, shopping at Celestial Seasonings, stopping at the Colorado Railroad Museum and going back up into the mountains to see the West Portal of the Moffat Tunnel, Idaho Springs, Central City and Georgetown.

Later guys!
