Michigan Campgrounds

Post by 3littlecoasties on 4/5/2008, 3:55 pm

Ok, I'll continue this one from the other forum.....
Aloha State Park: Great place! private boat launch, great scenary
3 out of 5 stars

Petoskey S.P.: Good for Petoskey stones, watch the corners (trees need to be cut back a bit), awesome beach!! 3 out of 5 stars

Tawas S.P.: Beautiful lighthouse views from your camper, great beaches. 3 out of 5 stars

Young S.P.: Beautiful beach on Lake Charlevoix. 3 out of 5 stars

Fisherman's Island S.P.: very primitive, no hook ups...nothing, just scenary. (great for Deer Camp) 1 star...sorry

Indian River RV Resort & Campground: Awesome place!! Friendly owners, 4 out of 5 stars!!

Jellystone Frankenmuth: 5 out of 5 Stars...by far the best!! Must see!! Alot of kids activities, CLEAN, FRIENDLY!!!

Bay City S.P.: Really boring....2 out of 5 stars....they had issue with standing water in alot of the sites.

Van Buren S.P.: Nice Sand dunes!! 3 out of 5 stars.

J.P. Hoffmaster: Brother camp'd there, said it was ok. NO ALCOHOL, Ranger Rick will make you dump it out. 2 out of 5 stars.

Oscoda KOA: Boring, kind of run down a bit, new owners this year, promise to improve... 3 out of 5 stars

Petoskey KOA: Very nice 4 out of 5 stars, close to downtown and shopping.

Brimley S.P. (upper pen): Close to the falls, Whitefish Point, and Oswald Bear Ranch(must see!) 3 out of 5 stars.
(be sure to check wind conditions at the Mackinaw Bridge, we lost our awning going across)

Mill Creek Campground (Mackinaw City): 2 out of 5 stars, good views of the straits and the Mackinaw bridge, but campers are jam packed in there (hard to put your awning out), very crowded!

Grayling jellystone one of our favorites lots to do for the kids, nice pool almost all shaded sites large trees. It's our Memorial and Labor day stops every year.

Camp Cadillac nice campground freindly owners, also have a petting zoo with deer and goats nice playground and fishing pond.

Port Huron KOA tons to do, putt-putt, batting cages,go-carts, water-carts, bouncing pillow, plus lots of activities just need extra fun money.

Millcreek Mackinaw great view of straits and bridge, but small sites just enjoy the view beutiful.

We will be trying some new campgrounds this year so hopefully have some more reviews later through the camping season.

Just visited the Campground at the Alpena Air National Guard Base. If you're military, or prior service (any branch), just need your id card and you're camper! The small CG is nice with a new bath house, free canoe/paddle boat/kayak rentals, water and electric hook ups or tent sites for those who like to rough it. There is a nice bar/resteraunt right on the CG. There is also I believe its called the thunder river right there with a small launch ramp. For $10 a night, you can't beat it!!

Years ago --- ummmmm, about 30 years ago --- we stayed at several Michigan state parks. We were very impressed with their cleanliness and facilities. Now that we're retired, we'll definitely be going back.

Alpena, that's a pretty nice place. Been there a few times, did some scuba diving there. I have a 1/3 acre lot up there and will in one of these days set it up for the camper.

Shooter,
Not to redirect this thread or anything....but I was looking for acerage around that area just to park my camper on (kind of like a private camp site) and every place said no due to township or subdivision rules etc.... What's the secret to get around that????
Thanks,
Eric

I haven't actually checked, yet. My thought was to set up water & sewer (well & septic) and use a generator for power since I wouldn't leave the camper there.

Just spent the weekend at Interlochen State Park: 2 out of 5 stars.
The facilities were nice, the sites were a little tight though. You couldn't swim in the lake because of swimmers itch, however there is an outdoor water park just down the road. There was a nice campground store with kayak rentals. Not a lot of grass, so if it rained alot, things got a little muddy. However, Traverse City is close by with lots to do!!

I posted some reviews on the old site and will not repeat myself too much.....

Indian River campground and resort - I agree with 3littlecoasties, top notch!

frankenmouth Jellystone is also nice with all of the stuff to do in the area. just watch what site you get because if it is tight you will for sure be staggering awnings and slides.

Addison Oaks - One of our favorites close to home, lots of activities, one of the best mountain bike trails in the area plus paved bike/hike paths. Only downfall no reservations which usually isnt a problem aside from holiday weekends.

Camp Dearborn - large campground, NO PETS. Aside from that a lot of activities nice beach and pool.

We have trips planned to Holly SP, Hocking hills OH, waterloo & harbortown RV park which we have not visited yet. I will post up following our trips.

Just went to Monument Campground, it's in the Huron National Forest (just ouside of Tawas). Very rustic, no hook ups, no dump tank, no water...however, it was very well kept and the sites were paved! Actually saw a "cat" there!! $15.00 a night, wasn't crowded at all, probably about 25 to 30 sites available and was only about 8 campers, very quiet and low key. As soon as I get my generator, I'm going there again, the DW needs her electricity!! (but then again, so do I!) lol!

just returned from Holly rec area . It was a real nice campground I would compare it to Pontiac Lake. Did some mountain biking at nearby Holdridge rec area. Also found out that the hike trails around the campground are also mountain bike trails as of last year.

The nearby beach is also very nice.

returned from a week long trip to Hocking Hills that ended at a weekend in Waterloo state park - portage lake campground. It is a nice campground with a nice beach, but it is alchohol free. Which some in our group found out does not mean keep cans under the cover of coozies. To make a long story short some campers had to open all of the beverages in thier cooler and dump them out under the surveilance of the local authorities and get a warning of a misdemeaner if it happened again.....

I will need to make a note of that. I know that Jeff would pack up the WC and family and pull out before he would dump his Bud Light. God forbid if the Bud get's wasted. We stay a few times a year in Fenwick at a Christian campground and the tell you right up front that alcohol is ok but it must stay on your lot.

Re: Michigan Campgrounds

Post by ffruff22 on 8/25/2008, 2:36 pm

we have stayed in a lot of state parks and this is the first experiance that we have had like this. We had 6 campers (approx. 30 people) and were just sitting around the fire having normal discussions (not being real loud). I think that the amount of people sort of drew the attention of the powers to be.....
