XM Radio

Post by schrowang on 9/7/2009, 2:52 pm

On long distance trips it can be a pain trying to find a good C&W or News/Talk radio station along the way. I used to go online before a trip and use the radio station locator at www.radio-locator.com but then the DW found a book at Camping World with all of the US stations in it, listed by type of broadcast. Even then both FM and AM fade too quickly and there are areas where there is no radio reception at all.

Our solution was to purchase the Family Friendly XM Radio package ($11.95/mo) along with the base XM unit on sale at Best Buy ($75.00). It was easily wired in and programmed and now we have a selection of great channels to listen to, without commercial interuption. It was a great find for us at what we consider to be a reasonable price.

Sat radio is sweet! I've had it for 3 years in my truck (factory option). I haven't listen to ant radio since, who wants talk and commercials?? I pay a yearly fee to save money over the monthly fee. Mine is Sirus, which I guess now its Sirius/XM.

One trick I learned is to let it expire (or cancel it) every year at renewal time. Within 3-4 weeks they will contact you and offer it for half price for the year. I never listen to anything but sat radio now...except for the cancel period.

I've got the cat wired for XM, so I take the receiver into the cat and enjoy sat radio while I'm camping. Bought a home kit on sal for $20 and wired it up.

I'm on sirius, in the truck, and my wife bought the boom box that goes with it, it sounds as nice as a bose radio speakers, you can also hook your Ipod up to it also. I use that around the camper and house or where ever I might be.

Don't forget you can also listen to your Sirius stations over the internet as well.

XM over the internet as well. In campgrounds with free wifi, I plug my laptop into the Concertone and listen to XM that way.

I heard, they are going to start charging $2.99 to get the online feed after current contracts expire (unless you got a lifetime contract).

You can also get Sirius on Dish network in the 6000s. I used to hook up the sat in the cat until I got my portable wired up.

XM - Part 2

Post by schrowang on 9/20/2009, 2:57 pm

On the road west (I-40) we were constantly having find those blank stations. So, when we got to OK City, I purchased the antenna connection from Best Buy. Because Dodge has a different antenna connector I also had to purchase the antenna lead adaptors.

Works like a charm now. I have it set for 107.9 and when we turn on the XM set, the adaptor cuts out the radio antenna and begins to broadcast its own signal on 107.9.

The mod took twice as long because I had to return to Best Buy for the antenna lead adaptors. To bad the GEEK didn't tell me that in the first place. And I did tell him it was for a Dodge AM/FM/CD radio.

After reading these posts, I installed Sirius before leaving Virginia. We have really enjoyed traveling west without the need for searching for channels. Love those 60's songs!
