Back From S. Dakota part 2

S. Dakota Day 5
Today we visited Mount Rushmore. $10.00 to park the truck but it’s free to get into Mt. Rushmore. Hmmm, it seems to me they just want to get around the senior’s park pass that allows free entry to national parks.
Mt. Rushmore was much better than I expected it to be. My wife and I walked the boardwalk trail that takes you through the ponderosa pines to the base of the mount. Man, there were a lot of steps on the trail, a total 380 I think.

The Avenue of Flags leading to Mt. Rushmore. Each flag represents a state.

In the afternoon we drove to the Crazy Horse Memorial. Work began in earnest on this rock sculpture in the mid-1950’s. Judging from the progress, this memorial won’t be finished in my lifetime, or my kid’s lifetime either. It was very impressive though.

The face of Crazy Horse is nine stories tall.

It will be a long time before the mountain will look like this sculpture.

S. Dakota Day 6
NUTS!!! Major brake problems on the truck this morning. The only repair shop in Hill City, SD was a NAPA auto parts store. We lost the whole day getting the brakes repaired. They did a good job and their price was very reasonable.
In an effort to salvage something of our day, we drove to the Prairie Berry Winery on the outskirts of town to do a bit of wine tasting. Wow, they make some lousy tasting wines. I gave up trying to make something of our day and drove back to the campground. It had rained all day so I guess if we had to lose a day to a breakdown, a rainy day would be a good one to lose.

From your picture, it doesn't look like they've made ANY progress on Crazy Horse since we were there in 98.

If memory serves, they were having trouble with funding even back then.

As for your last day, I like your style; salvage the day by getting hammered on cheap wine! I'll bet by the sixth glass it was starting to taste pretty good!! Laughing clown
