Cell phone booster

Post by Dennis on 4/19/2008, 3:47 pm

Does anyone have any input or experience with cell phone boosters? There is a state park campground close to home that has no cell signal. I have looked at the smooth talker, but before I kick out $250+ I wanted to see if they work.

I have the Smoothtalker amp in my company truck. I travel in areas with minimal coverage, it works great.

I recommend two steps to getting better coverage. First, get an external antenna. You need an external antenna anyway if you decide to get an amp. Try the antenna first, it may give you enough signal. Willson antenna makes some good stuff. You probably just want a magnetic mount. The antenna comes with a mini-UHF connector, so don't forget to buy the adapter for your specific cell phone.

If the antenna alone does not provide enough signal, you can get an amp. Make sure you get the correct one for the system your cell carrier uses (TDMA, CDMA, GSM, etc).

A good resource can usually be found at your local Motorola shop. These guys install lots of cell phones and if you need help can give you advice on antennas, amps, & car kits.

I've installed a lot of these, so let me know if you need any more info.

I checked out the Smoothtalker site, looks like you can get everything from them. Antenna, amp, cable & adapter for your phone.

I wonder how they'd work in the mountains. We often can't get a signal when we camp in the mountains.

There will still be places you can't get a signal. The booster just makes a weak signal better. If you are in a location with absolutely no coverage the booster won't help. I would try an antenna first and see how that works.
