Equa-Flex question
Ok guys, just had the equa-flex installed, and have a question for those that have had the system for some time. I carry one of the "ramps" that I use to change a tire by pulling the lead/trailing wheel up, leaving the other suspended without having to use any sort of jack. Will this work with the equa-flex? It appears that each wheel is now more independent of the other, and may require a jack under the axle.

Good question. I was looking at the same kind of jack and plan to install the Equa-Flex soon. How do you like them?

Re: Equa-Flex question
The jury is still out. Haven't pulled any yet, only from the mechanic back to my house. But we are supposed to leave on Sept. 4 for New Mexico, and I will probably cover about 3,500 miles total. Should have a good "feel" for them by then!!

Re: Equa-Flex question
EZ,
I put together 3 pieces of 2x to make a ramp to change a tire with. So, 3 2X's equal 4.5 inches, this was too low for the other tire to be off the ground. But, if I had another 2x, that would have done it.
So, if your ramp is close to 6", it should work. Better give it a try before you leave for your trip.
I'm very satisfied with our equa-flex, I think the truck rides better with less jerking around.

Re: Equa-Flex question
EZ Rider. You are correct. There is more travel. I purchased a used 2008 RKBS in spring. One of the first things that I did was change the rusty lug nuts and center caps. I tried my Trailer Aid at first and it did not work. I set it on top of two 2"x8"'s and it still wasn't high enough. I was concerned about stability and twisting the frame if I tried to go any higher. I did some research and found the recommended way to lift the unit is by the frame. You are not to lift the weight of the trailer by placing the jack under the axle. I already carried one 12 ton bottle jack. I purchased another. I set blocks under the frame directly in front of the front tire and directly behind the back tire. When you lift evenly you only need to lift about 3" and the axles lift together. I am glad I found this out at home instead of out on the road.

Re: Equa-Flex question
When changing tires on my 29BHBP with Equaflex, I was able to use a ramp to change tires (it was an older style one - much wider than the Trailer Aid ramp sold now ...) My ramp became somewhat crushed after the forth tire change (swapped out the 15" ones for 16" ones) but when I looked at it recently it had reformed in shape .... it is a poly ramp so I think the material inside compressed, then the poly material pressed it back into shape - scary.
I second using bottle jacks with the frame when available (also use jack stands as a safety precaution).

Re: Equa-Flex question
I know you are not supposed to lift the entire unit by the axles, but what do you think about using 7" of ramp on the lead/trail wheel, and if that does not get the free wheel off the ground, then using a scissor/small bottle jack with just enough lift to lif that tire off the ground?

Re: Equa-Flex question
I ususlly lift one tire off the ground by lacking in bebtween the two u-bolts on the axle just enough to rotate the tire and exchange. This doesn't lift the weight of the trailer and shouldn't be different then the tire supporting that weight.

Re: Equa-Flex question
My springs are below the axle, so I have lifted 1 tire up with the bottle jack positioned on the spring right where the spring and the axle meet.
But, when I'm home, I have 2 lengths of telephone pole, I lower the landing gear, put 1 section of pole under the frame behind the axles, under the frame. Then raise the landing gear all the way up, put another pole under the frame in front of the axles, then lower the landing gear. Both tires are lifted off the ground, and I dont even break a sweat.
