Our Trip begins Sunday

Post by Richard Mondavi on 8/7/2009, 9:36 am

Well, I think we have everything ready to go for our trip to South Dakota. Two weeks ago I put new tires on the rear of the truck. This week the water pump on the truck shot craps so I had to have a new one installed. We’re ready for the trip but our wallet sure got lighter.

The plan is to leave early Sunday morning and slowly head to the Black Hills of SD. We are really going to wing it as far as what campgrounds we will be staying at. If all goes well we will return back home before labor day weekend.

Our only mandatory stops along the route to Mount Rushmore are Sioux Falls, the Corn Palace, and since we’re in S. Dakota we HAVE to stop at Wall Drug.

The Sturgis Rally officially ends on the 9th but I’m sure there will still be plenty of stragglers in the area. I think the first week of August is the only time the population of S. Dakota grows to over a million people.

Walls drug is like going back in the old days when I was a boy. They have lots of things to look at and I know you will have to purchase something before you get out of the place. They had a policy of giving free coffee to Veterans back in the 90's. Lots of things to do and see and have fun.

Richard,

Have a great trip. Watch the heat as you travel across SD on I-90. We saw temps of 106*F (truck overhead thermometer) going east in July.

Wall Drugs is a hoot. Be sure to read the history of how it all started. I think you'll like the store. There is ample parking for towed RV's just west of the store.

Mount Rushmore is awesome. Got a lump in my thoat looking at it.

BTW, the fort from movie Dances With Wolves is on the highway between Mt. Rushmore and Rapid City. They shot some of the location stuff there.

Best to ya' and travel safe. snoopy
