Gun's
I was wondering what everybodys thoughts were on carrying a weapon when they go camping.
I have a concealed weapons permit and carry a kimber 45 auto. It's not the four legged animals that concern
me but the two legged one's especially when your hiking four or five miles deep in the back country.
I believe it is my job to keep my wife and and my dogs safe no matter what it is.

Re: Gun's
I always have protections when I head out to the backwoods. I also have a couple 22's for fun.
Some people have small children to worry about; I don't have that issue anymore. In any case, my kids were always taught gun safety and respect.
I don't have a concealed carry permit; don't think I need one. If I decide to carry, it won't be concealed.

I never use to take anything, but the last few trips I have packed the DW's 20 gauge pump in the closet along with a box of #6 shells.
I'd hate to take one of MY double's and have it stolen.

Re: Gun's
We always carry when we're out working on the claims. When we're boondocking, we usually keep something within reaching distance while in camp; caliber dependent on location.
Odds are, the four-legged critters will give you a wide berth unless you're careless, or go looking for trouble. It's the two-legged varmints that we're most wary of. With pot growers and thieves growing in numbers, it's become more of a necessity than an option, IMO.
We still like to take a .22 ruger for some plinking fun when we're out on Gov't land. The price of ammo these days prohibit us from target shooting with bigger calibers.

QUESTION: Has anyone ever had to use a firearm while camping?[/quote]
NO.... But I've pulled it. When you have a 500Lb plus bear come out of the woods 30' from you. I was surprised just how fast I had the gun in my hand. He looked at me and I looked at him. Then he just shook his head and went on his way. having to shoot is the last thing I would ever want to do! I hope that day never comes.

Re: Gun's
I have a .40 and a few .22's always close at hand, never know when you might need one. Lots of mt lions running through the hills and the 2 legged creatures are always un-predictable. Had a camper shoot an intruder last year in local camp ground trying to brake in at 4am in the morning. Guy was drunk and high on meth. Found him severly wounded hiding in a vehicle in another part of the camp ground. Too bad the shooter had to shoot through the door and couldn't have taken better aim. Mine are always safely tucked away and the kids have a deathly fear of them any time I an transfering them from house to camper, which is a good thing. Here are the DW and I playing a little dirty harry last week in the hills.

I ALWAYS carry. I do have a permit. My Ruger 9mm or .40 is always on or at my side. I've taught the DW to properly handle, load and shoot. I have always showed my kids how dangerous a gun is and how to respect them. I would rather them be a little scared of them than curious of them. So far so good. Only a 9 year old left . Matts 19 and the oldest is 23 and they never touched them. But I tried to show them responsibility with them always. I just don't think I'm gonna let someone or something take advantage of me or my family.

Re: Gun's
More states honor the Utah concealed weapon permit than any other state permit. You can obtain an Utah cwp and live in another state. Therefore, I have a Utah cwp and my wife has a Calif. cwp so we cover more states. State, County and city laws very from state to state. In the WC we keep a 12 ga. shotgun with #4 shot. In the Pickup, we keep a .357 Dan Wesson. I do not carry the .357 unless we are hiking out in the wilderness where four and two legged animals roam.. It is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. When we are traveling I go out of my way to NOT let people know that we have a gun. The only time it would come out, is when it would be needed.

My Glock 9mm is like American Express, I never leave home without it. I just think a little protection, is better than none. There are a lot of four legged varmits around, and whole lot of two legged varmits out on the loose also.LOL. After returning from Iraq, it's just an everyday item, like a wallet.

I carry as well 45 Auto, its the two legged unpredictable human I worry about the most, now more then ever with the economy the way it is. I went to a security conference recently where they showed in the last five months residential burglary has doubled. I also work in the streets as a ff/emt and see it everyday so I take no chances. My family is to important.

Re: Gun's
For the camper, a Mossburg 500A is a very good choice. It is a 12 ga. pump shotgun that has interchangeable barrels. You can use a longer barrel for hunting and the 18 1/2 barrel for protection. There are many other fine weapons for protection, but I use this one. We have the third one down.. eight shots.

A buddy of mine has the Mossberg Cruiser with Mossy Oak Camo. It's the only item out of his extensive gun collection I've asked to have, if he kicks the bucket before me.
I'd love to find a 410/22 over-under combo to keep in the camper permanently. I know someone make it, I just haven't taken the time to find out who.

On extended trips through other states I carry a 12 ga. pump action with an 18 inch barrel and a few boxes of slugs and 00 buck shot.
For trips within our state I bring a Taurus 9mm.
Generally people steer clear of us at our campsite. I think it might have something to do with the hockey mask I wear and the small chainsaw I carry around. No one ever seems to take a shorcut through our campsite either.

Re: Gun's
In our situation it depends on what we are doing and where we are going. If it is a hunting trip, we carry what is needed for the trip. If headed into Canada, no guns! General carry is a 357 -- good for rat shot to heavy duty loads and compact.
Always carry bear spray for the trail and camp. Have not had any problem with true bear spray with Canadian customs. Will take it again this fall. (It can also be purchased in Canada.) We spend considerable time in moose and bear country. Wildlife intrusion is greater every day, and in some areas so is the 2 legged type. Have carried the Louisville Slugger and also truckers "tire banger".
Have I ever had to use them? No, but on 2 dispersed camping occassions I was prepared. Also had a few campgrounds with a "friendly" black bear that kept us on our toes. Moose can also keep you on the alert.

Re: Gun's
I have a FL permit to carry. Normally I carry a Walther PPKS .380 next to me, it is really good at close range and a FN 5.7mm in the trailer. My favorite one, but to big and heavy to carry on a trip is a Desert Eagle .44 mag. semi-auto. The problem is if you use it you go deaf and the other person disapears.

Re: Gun's
I don't have a permit and I don't usually carry, but living out in the west, especially in Arizona you can pack but it must not be concealed. We take our .357 Mag when we travel and make it "very available" when we boondock. As was stated before, "It's them dern two-legged critters ya gotta watch".

if you guys all stayed at the same CG at the same time, you'd look like a well armed militia ! i have a decent gun collecion, about 30 long guns while the only sidearms i have are a s&w 9mm model 1911, a 44 mag super redhawk,a ruger 22, and an old H&R 22 single shot revolver...with enough ammo for each to carry on for months. my question, how many of you with a CCW can take your weapon out of state and have the CCW sill be good ? i mean, if you have i, when you go out of state, you you have re-register ?

If you read my above post, you will see that the Utah CWP is honored by more states than any other permit. You can live in another state and acquire a Utah CWP.
Unfortunately Calif. does not honor the Utah permit, so my wife has a Calif. permit and I have a Utah permit.
I read a while back that a new law allowed you to carry a weapon in Federal Parks.. Does anyone have any new information about that?
