No power

Post by harddock on 6/17/2009, 6:59 am

I am hooked up at home (20amp) to get ready to travel for first time. Ran water heater, then shut off at circut breaker, also shut off A/C so no one would acciidentally try it. I drained the water heater. Fridge was on electric, and ceilin fan. That's it.

Today I notice when I opened the door the ceiling fan not on. upon further investigation nothing works except wall sockets (meter shows 120) and microwave clock. No fridge, no lights, no slide, jacks, landing gear, even the gas detector light is out. I tried resetting the circut breaker and still the same. Did something happen to converter and What if anything at home can be done?

Sounds like your battery is dead. Do you have a volt meter, check to see if it has any power. I believe you have to have a good battery for any of your 12 volt stuff to work.

But, your converter is suppose to charge your battery when its plugged in.

So, sounds like its either your battery is dead and wont hold a charge, or your converter has died.

You could try an external battery charger to see if the battery will hold a charge.

have you checked the water in the battery lately?

I was just about to edit. The battery was dead, I didn't realize everything went through it. On my MH some was 12/ some was 120. So I have a charger hooked up and everything works. I am goin to switch with a fully charged battery and monitor to see that the converter is charging. Meanwhile I'll see if this battery is toast. It was charged when I put it in but it sat unpluged for a month or better.

one of the 30amp fues was fried so maybe trying to charge and run some stuff was too much for it. Hopefully nothing serious.

I was scratching my head as to why your battery would be dead if you were hooked up to home shore power.

The 30 amp fuse does explain alot, but there was a cause to that fuse blowing that still needs to be remedied. Did you by chance have a power surge at the house while the trailer was plugged in?

Ok from the start. I hooked up to FW 3 days ago. Hooked my trailer plug to test lights, raised landing gear and moved the FW to the house. (never gave the original battery a thought). Hitched up to shore power, ran, ceiling fan,and lights. Yesterday I ran the fridge, water heater, and concertone. shut down WH when I knew it worked. Went out today to check fridge temp and ceiling fan was off. So was the fridge, lights, stereo. I had 120 to plugs. and fuse blown (12v 30 amp). Put in a good battery and everything works but still keeps blowing both 30 amp 12v fuses.

FW sat with a fully charged battery for month + without shore power. Thats why original battery may have been dead or close to it.

If it keeps blowing the 30A green fuses there's probably a dead short somewhere in the wiring from the battery to the panel. On the house side of the DC panel each of the 15A and 20A fuses would blow if there were a dead short in one of their circuites. Because it's one or the other of the 30A mains methinks that a dead short lurks somewhere about. Quick Watson, the multi-meter. The games afoot .... lol!

You should be able use your multi-meter tas an ampmeter o check current flow (amperage) depending on the make/model. Connect the red and black leads to the meter and switch it to ampmeter setting. Disconnect the lead from the 30A fuse and connect one meter test lead to the panel and the other to the disconnected wire. Then turn the circuit on. You'll be able to see how much current is actually flowing through the meter. If it's a dead short it will peak very quickly to be ready to kill it quick. At least you'll know which lead has the dead short.

Luck!

Your Concertone and the propane sniffer will kill the battery in less than a 3 weeks. So I'm not surprised at that.

But, almost sounds like a short somewhere that's causing the 30amp fuses to blow.

I had some similar problems earlier. Went through some new batteries, thank god for full replacement warranties, wound up being the converter. Forest/dealer replaced it under warranty. Works great since. Cool

i'm not sure as to how to turn on the circut. According to Parralax diagram those two 30a fuses are for reverse polarity and should only blow if battery hooked up backwards which it is not. I'll camp with a bat charger. until dealer can take it in.

It happend to me

Post by capthowdy6 on 6/23/2009, 8:45 am

On our maiden voyage the same thing happened. It did turn out to be the converter which needed replacing. What the tech told me to do if it happened again was to open the converter cover, disconnect the blue and white wires, replace the 30 amp fuses, and hook up to a battery charger. The blown converter acts like the battery is hooked up backwards and blows the fuses. If you tried hooking your tow vehicle up then chances are you blew your 12 volt charging fuse in the truck too. The microwave and Television work off the 120 that is why they were unaffected.

Good luck!!!

Harddock, you might want to check out the main plug to the rv. My wire's to the plug were loose, cause to heat up blown the 30amp fuse & stop the inverter from charging the battey. Had to pull the marine plug to find the loose wires. wish you luck !! jim

I talked to my dealers service guy and Ron Batts and neither one mentioned anything about, or removing the blue and white wires. They just said run a battery charger to be able to camp. I moved the unit today but I never checked the truck fuse. I'll look at that tommorrow.

I was looking around in my fuse block on my TV and found my 20AMP trailer charging fuse blown. I have no idea as to when it happened. But my converter seems to be working just fine. HMMMMMMM

Too often in forums people ask a question or have a problem and many people respond with their stories, suggestions, remedies etc. Then we never hear if the problem was solved and if any of the suggestions worked or what the route cause of the problem was.

The forum allowed me to try or confirm the possabilities of what I thoght would solve the issue. When I had to bring it to the dealer I was able to tell the service man what had been tried thereby saving them time running the same tests allowing them to pinpoint the problem quicker.

This and other forums are a wealth of valuable information for troubles, improvements, retailers, campground, expieriences and even humor. plus you meet the nicest, helpful people.
