Lobster Country

Post by Frank L on Sat Jun 13, 2009 3:40 am

Finally, we are getting to use the Cat. Leaving Wednesday for Maine by way of Blacksburg, VA. I have some classes to take at the Rescue College in Blacksburg next weekend and then we're headed up I-81 with a final destination of Maine for five days. Have stops planned in Harrisburg, Long Lake, Burlington, and Postsmouth. Looking forward to being on the road and away from the two-way. Maybe we'll see you along the way!

Frank,

From Kittery to Bar Habor there are some very fine campgrounds to be found in coastal Maine. We've stayed at many over the years and haven't stumbled into a bad one yet. There are tons of Lobster Pounds along the way too. You can't go wrong with a New England boiled dinner. Lobster, Clams, Corn on the Cob, Cole Slaw and French Fries ...... mmmmmmm good.

We hope that you have a great trip. snoopy

If you like to go " outBack" Baxter wilderness area is awesome.
Theres a few remote campgrounds out there right on the lakes.
Moose galore on the creeks. The end of the AT trail is on mt katadon or however you spell that. Really pretty place.
But so is Acadia Park,,,, its been awhile since i was there so not sure about the campgrounds on the coast.

New England was very much in our plans for this fall, but we've decided to postpone that trip until next year.

If all goes as planned, we will be going to the Covered Bridge Festival in Parke County Indiana this fall. http://www.coveredbridges.com/

When we lived in Illinois, we used to go to the CBF every year. We moved from Illinois in 1984, and have been to the CBF once since then.

If you find yourself in Wiscasset Maine (near Boothbay) you have to stop at Red's Eats. They have the BEST lobster roll in the world. You can tell if they are open because no matter what time it is, there will be a line. we are going back there this summer. First we are doing 4 days in Acadia then down to Boothbay for 4 days. Enjoy your trip.

Enjoy your trip!! Wonderful time of year to head to Maine. We made the trip last year with our 5th wheel ( didn't have the cat yet ). Stayed in Portland a few days and then just outside of Bar Harbor for a week. I cant say enough about Acadia National Park. Just incredible scenery. Also made a day trip north to Baxter State park for some moose sightseeing. Saw lots. Is a trip to remember. Don't fill up on Lobster. You need to leave room for blueberry pie!!!

Be prepared for some really mean black flys,,,, If you have any spot of open skin it will be welped up like a dog in seconds....

Other than that I enjoyed it as much as Acadia.
We paddled up a big creek in the canoe and saw moose on every bend in the creek. Kinda scary but pretty at the same time. Your pretty much a sit'n duck in a canoe if you happen to "spook" one .

We stayed at a B&B just down from BarHarbor that was on a small bay. The guy took us out on his boat at sunset, Awesome views from the water to. We did the Puffin and whale boat tours, Both of those are awesome. If you get sea sick easy don't do the whale tour. The swells are pretty bouncy off of barharbor. Ask how bad they are first. We don't get sea sick but was pretty peeded off that we had to see 20 or so people hanging on the rail while your trying to see the whales.... They would have paid 40 bucks to get back off the boat.....
The puffin tour uses the inside of the islands to get to where theyre going so its a pretty smooth ride. I liked it better than the whales..... The puffins are really cool if you've never seen them before....

We've completed two legs. One to Blacksburg VA where we stayed at New River Junction Campground. I can't say much about the amenties, but we were parked about twenty feet from the New River and the scenery made up for anything lacking in the park. (Will post pictures). We were there four days and are now in Lickdale Campground just off I-81near Lebenon PA. Nice place, Good Sam. Went to see my dad's grave at Indiantown National Cemetary. Appropriate being Father's Day. We'll spend two nites here then on to Long Lake in the Aderondacks as we work our way north. We'll keep you posted.

The Adirondacks were simply beautiful and we enjoyed seeing friends of ours who have a "cabin" on Long Lake. We stayed at Lake Eaton State Park and dry camped. What a great spot. On Thursday we headed for Vermont and stayed at another nice park, Pine Hollow. We were fortunate enough to get to see a Cruise-in at Hemmings Motor News in Bennington. Saturday found us on the road again heading east on Route 9. We arrived at Scarborough Maine around noon and set up camp at Wassamki Springs. First order of business was LOBSTER which we were able to find at the Portland Lobster Company. Sunday we were met with rain and fog and, unfortunately that's the forecast for the next two days. Oh well, it's just nice to be on the road and in a different routine. Wednesday it's off to Mass. to see our oldest son and then off to PA for an overniter before heading for beautiful downtown Cobbs Creek. It's been fun and the Cat has been a comfortable home away from home. Keyboard

Hope you are enjoying the wonderful weather here in New England. It's been lousy for three weeks. I see in your original post that you are going to Burlington. Is that MA? I grew up there.
