Colorado Bound

Post by Texas Cruiser on 6/8/2009, 2:58 pm

We are headed to Colorado in July. Does anyone know of any nice RV parks around Colorado Springs & the Durango area. I would like to find a place that is off of the beaten path that has nice scenery. Any suggestions? Also need a nice place around the Carlsbad, NM area.

Thanks,
Mike

I didn't care for most of the campgrounds in Colorado Springs. Many people like the Garden of the Gods campground but I didn't care for it. We stayed 16 miles south of Colorado Springs at the Mountaindale RV park and liked it quite a bit. They don't have a pool but they do have a hot tub. When we were there they didn't have cable but they did have free WiFi. Mule Deer do come into the campground. There are a lot of trees in the campgound so if you use Dish or Direct TV you need to ask for a clear site. Here are a few photos.
This is a view of the Mountaindale campground from the hiking trail.

This was our campsite at Mountaindale.

That looks like a nice campground. The campsites are rather close together - do they ever fill them all?

On weekends the campground is pretty full, not so much during the week. We used this park as a base for seeing the Royal Gorge and Manitou Springs.

We've stayed at Garden of the Gods CG twice and both times we had a positive experience. The CG is just west of town and off of US-24. The CG was well maintained, friendly staff, nice pool and good bath houses. Another plus is that the CG is close to the major Colorado Springs attractions, i.e.; Pikes Peak (auto road & cog railway), Garden of the Gods, Cave of the Winds and Manitou Springs. We would stay there again.

In Durango we stayed at the KOA just east of town on US-160. Again, nice CG run by friendly folks. We stayed 3 nights while we visited Mesa Verde and road the Durango & Silverton RR up to Silverton. We would stay there again.

Best to ya'. Colorado is a beautiful state. Enjoy snoopy

Lightner Creek RV
In Durango I would suggest this one

In the Colorado Springs area I would go up to Woodland Park as it is in the foothills and much more scenic. My pick is Wodland Park RV

Enjoy our great state,

Let me know if you are interested in dry camping; I can recommend several places around Durango.

We too are Colorado bound this summer. We are staying at the KOA in Cortez and Elk Meadow Lodge and RV Resort in Estes Park.

Colorado RV Camps

Post by gkeager on 6/16/2009, 3:47 pm

We just spent a week at Sundance RV Park in Cortez, CO. Very clean and friendly. Close to a lot of stuff to see, Mesa Verde Natl Park and not too far from Durango. The closer you get to Durango it's more crowded and expensive. We are currently at Mountain Dale Campground 14 miles south of Colorado Springs on SR 115. Very clean and friendly also. Very close to Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge and many other attractions. We will be staying at both of these parks again on future visits. A personal note, take the drive up Pikes Peak, we did today, quite unique. Cool

Thanks for all the suggestions, we finally made reservations.
We will be staying at Woodland RV Park in Colorado Springs. We have a site reserved that has a fantastic view of Pikes Peak according to the person that took my reservation. In Durango we will be staying at Lightner Creek RV park.
We are really getting excited about the trip. Now we are trying to figure out what we will do & see.

If you like to stay at State Parks Brantley Lake near Carlsbad is nice. It has Water and Electric hookups. But its a bit out of town.
