Refer fan
Hello all,
I bought one of these refer fans off Ebay Click Here and I love it. I did use a battery operated fan that took two D batteries monthly, no more buying expensive batteries! Works great, easy to use, and cheaper than battery powered fans cost. I believe the guy makes them himself.

Yes it does. But, it draws very little. I have used it for about 9 months. Have never had any battery problems.

One end clips in to the refrigerator fins with an alligator clip (-). The other end clips on the wire that comes into the door light switch (+).

Re: Refer fan
It looks like 2 computer chip cooling fans mounted on a piece of aluminum.
I may drag one of my old towers out and yank the fan out and see if I can build one.....

that would be great way to recycle something thats still good instead of dumping it at the trash dump.

Let me know how that works for ya philip. I have one now looking at me on my computer desk that I was wondering what to do with.

It's interesting you should say that. I can't keep our fridge as cool as before the recall either! Our fridge temps got as high as 49 last saturday (which was 94 degrees with high humidity), and I even had the little slide dealy all the way to the top of the fins. My food is going to spoil if I camp in temps like that for any length of time!!
We have one of those battery operated fans in our fridge already, and I had a solar operated fan installed on the back side of our fridge early this year, but I can't even tell if it's running or not! If it is, it doesn't work well enough to make a difference.
If this keeps up, I might be forced to put an awning on the back of our Cat. At least that way, I could shade the back of the fridge from the heat of the sun when shade's not available; which is alot of the time!!

Have you contacted Dometic about the issues and the recall?

What I should do, is call the dealer and talk to them about this since they'd end up fixing Dometic's problems anyway. I should have said something when I had them put the solar fan in, but I didn't think about it at the time.

Re: Refer fan
Good idea about the computer fan. We've got an old processor sitting here doing absolutely no good.

Re: Refer fan
Having nothing better to do the winter before last, I decided to remove my fridge and fine tune its installation per the instructions I found on a web site. I was surprised to find that excess roofing membrane was blocking about 40% of the roof vent! I cleaned it up and reshaped the flew area behind the fridge for better airflow. After that, I camped in 103 degree heat with the fridge on elect and it ran great. The elect even cycled on and off so it couldn't have been working too hard to stay cool.
So if cooling is marginal, you may want to check the roof vent.

Re: Refer fan
Scott and Grace,
Thanks for the suggestion. We haven't noticed any cooling problems, but if we can make ours even more efficient, that would be great.
Bobby,
I just read and saved your instructions. Thanks.

Scott and Grace,
Do you remember what other fine tuning items where on the list? The roof membrane is a good catch as well as the reshaping of the flew area.
thanks...

Re: Refer fan
We took our 5er out 3 weeks ago and guess what, our fridge was way warmer than last year. We to had the Dometic warranty work done. Last year our fridge was toooo cold. This year tooo warm. And it seems to be worse on propane than electric. RV techs said not possible since both electric heater and propane flame us the same cooling coil. If you get an answer from Dometic, please post. For me, I took off the added heat shield to see if it would make a difference. Will post.

Re: Refer fan
Been thinking of mounting a CPU chip fan in frig also, was going to wire it across the switch so it only runs when the door is closed.
Bought two wireless thermometers at Big Lots right after I got my WC. Mounted one receiver above the A/C thermostat and put one xmitter in the freezer and the other one inside the pin-box. Use the other receiver in the truck this way I can monitor the frig while driving and also watch both temps inside the WC.

Re: Refer fan
Removing the heat shield did nothing. Again, as soon as I go to propane my fridge temp goes to 65 deg. On 120 VAC the fridge stays about 35 deg. I'm almost thinking it might be the control board. Anyone with ideas??

Re: Refer fan
Have your LP pressure checked. I had to have mine adjusted as it was acting exactly as your is. My pressure was low and they tend to be very sensitive to correct pressure. Once adjusted, it ran correctly.

Re: Refer fan
The technician found the problem was a fault relay, which controls the propane. Once replaced the flame is bigger and the frig works on both 110 and propane.

Re: Refer fan
I just hooked up one of the refer fans like Earl originally posted about. I was surprised that they blew toward the fins. I was expecting them to blow away from the fins.
As long as it helps the cooling process, I guess it doesn't matter which way it blows.

Re: Refer fan
Hi All!
I've been a "lurker" from the start, but just got around to registering. Thanks for all the good help.
When this post appeared last year, I also bought a fan from the guy on E-Bay, but since the "Cat" was in storage, didn't install it.
I understand how to hook it up electrically, but I'm stumped how to put it in the frig/on the fins. I do understand that it blows towards the fins. Any help? Or a Picture?
Thanks, Dave 2006 28RK
