AZ - Benson - Butterfield RV Resort

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 5/13/2009, 4:12 pm

This is a great place for an overnight visit - even two nights if you want to explore some of the points of interest in the area. It's squeaky clean and quiet. There is a railroad track nearby, but we haven't heard any trains. Each campsite has a tree, but the trees don't provide much shade or privacy. It really seems kind of sterile, which we wouldn't like for an extended visit. But, we would stay here again. The sites are easy to get into, and the campground is clean, we don't ask for much more for a night or two.

Note the slight hill in the center of the campsite - all of the sites in the front row have that rise.

Very straight lines. Not very interesting. I think this campground has a pretty large winter population of snowbirds.

About the trains. We really didn't notice until we went to bed. A train went by while Scruffy was in the shower. It wasn't bad, and the trains didn't keep us awake.

The Benson area has quite a few attractions. Last year we went to Tombstone and visited Boot Hill. The stories about the people buried in Boot Hill were very interesting. Yesterday was our second visit to Saguaro National Park - east. I think next time we'll go to SNP - west. We heard some people talking about the west park and think it would be a good stop on a future trip.

Tater,
I have been admiring your chrome trim rings around your wheels wells of your truck for quit a while, did they come from the factory? or did you add them yourselves?

We stayed in Wilcox, home of Rex Allen for those that still remember him. Nice RV park and plenty of close attractions. Cool

I added a set to my 2000 F250 (truck I previously had); they are a Ford part; the dealer can order them.

Rex Allen was a famous singing (like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers) cowboy who starred in many films. He starred in several Disney movies in the early days of Wonderful World of Disney and Wonderful World of Color. He was the original voice of the father in the Disney themepark ride Carousel of Progress. Although he isn't the father anymore, you can still hear his voice in a cameo role in Carousel of Progress.

When we first looked at our truck, it had red trim on the fenders, "barbed wire" pin stripes, red fiberglass running boards, the bug shield, and awnings. We liked the truck, but didn't like all the stuff on it. The work was done for the Ford dealer by a Tulsa company that does custom work. Apparently no one wanted all that stuff. Almost a year after we first looked at it, when we were ready to buy our fifth-wheel, we looked around and couldn't find what we wanted. On our way home once from a looking trip, we drove by our closest Ford dealer and decided to stop in and see if they had anything. In the showroom, at a great price, was our truck. We told them we would like to have it, but didn't like all the custom stuff. The dealer said they would drop the price of ALL that stuff and remove and replace whatever we didn't want. The dealer sent the truck back to the custom place, and the barbed wire pinstripes were removed, the running boards were replaced with chrome nerf bars, and the red fender trim was replaced with chrome. We kept the bug shield, and the little awnings.
