mattress

Post by pacat1 on Mon May 11, 2009 12:25 am

Just wondering if anyone has replaced the bed mattress with an upgraded one or not?
If so what kind did you upgrade to, do you like it, and where did you get it?
The oem just seems a little to stiff for my liking.

We just put a memory foam topper on ours and we like it better than the pillow top in our house.

We also put the memory foam topper on our when we first got it 3 years ago. Still kind of had issues with it though, just not as comfy as home.

So back in March before we left for 29 day trip, we went to Costco and bought the memory foam mattress, and its is very firm and comfy. It was on sale for $399, from $499. We should have done this when we first bought the CAT, what a difference.

Re: mattress

Post by bert and hap on Mon May 11, 2009 6:06 am

About 4 years ago I purchased a mattress from the local RV dealer, (had to special order though)
cost about 500.00 and my husband thought I was crazy, but after that first night...He was very happy I purchased it. The one we got is a serta firm with the pillow top. Very comfortable and we actually sleep better on it than the one we have at home. I would highly recommend an upgrade to mattress, especially if you or spouse have bad backs. However, double check to see if it will clear the items in the bedroom if you have a bedroom slide, if ours was just a 1/4 inch thicker it wouldn't have went under the shelf in the bedroom with the slide in.

And also WELCOME to the forum.
Glad you are here.

Happy Camping to all.

Re: mattress

Post by Cardinal_Bill on Mon May 11, 2009 7:01 am

Like oldmer1 we too replaced ours with a foam mattress. We agree we should have done it long ago.

1. It's warmer than the standard mattress, but we were mainly using the RV in the winter down in GA/FL/AZ.
2. It's thicker (about 12" thick) and heavier, the lifting arms
work harder to raise the bed and the mattress needs to be slide
slightly towards the foot of the bed so the head end can clear the wall
when raised up because of the increased thickness.
3. Move the old one out, put the new one in place and then open
the bag! I screwed up and decided to try it out on the floor in
the house first. Big mistake, took 4 adults to manuver it into
the RV then. cheers
4. It had a really funky chemical smell that took a while to dissipate.
5. We took the old mattress, added a bed frame and box spring,
and use it in our guest bedroom. People said it was
comfortable. Shocked
That room is 12X24' with a partial wall between the two areas.
Took the old queen bed and placed it in the other half and curtained
the room, so they had some privacy from the other party, when we had
guests last year and the year before. We take the old queen bed
down and move to the basement when nobody's visiting.

Bill, thanks for adding the rest that I forgot, we both must have bought the same bed....

Although, we did open the bag on the bed frame inside the camper. Laughing

We replaced ours with a sleep number bed

Post by cooksvillewildcat on Mon May 11, 2009 11:59 am

We bought a relatively inexpensive ($650) sleep number model 4000 bed. It is very comfortable - the original bed caused back problems ....

We replaced ours without even taking the original out of the plastic. Bought the mid-priced queen from Sams Club. Simmons, about $300 I think. At first we bought the higher priced pillow top version; much too soft for us; returned it for the mid priced one. Probably the best mod we have made.

Thank you to everyone that responded. I will look into those options. First I better measure height, because when my bed slides in it has to fit under the bedroom closet.

We have a memory foam topper plus an extra thick mattress pad that has memory foam in it. It's very comfortable.

We have a sleep number bed in our house. We replaced the foam pad on the sleep number mattress and took the old foam pad and put in the Cat. Made a huge difference is the comfort of the factory mattress.

Yes, the pump for the mattress requires AC.

If you adjust it when you have power it holds the setting, you don't loose any air. Sleep

Ok, that makes sense. I would have trim Kodiak's nails! He is not allowed on the furniture, but somehow make it up there at times.

I know hat you mean. Our dog starts off on the couch and when we wake up she is between us. Neither her nor the cats have given any problem because it deforms when the weight is applied.

Re: mattress

Sleep number beds change their settings when you change altitude - they loose pressure as you climb (found out the hard way) and they gain pressure as you descend. Fortunately my cheap 12V inverter will supply enough current for the sleep number bed to control the release of pressure without a problem, it just cannot activate the pump to inflate the bed (I am going to get a bigger inverter) .... so if we boondock, make sure the bed is pumped up higher than we need to start with.

With the foam top of the sleep number bed, it would take a lot to penetrate it with a dog's nails ... the inflation chambers are pretty tough too.

We replaced our mattress with a residential pillow top mattress after the 1st camping season. That was after trying memory foam and quilted "feather bed" toppers. Now that we getting delivery of our new 31TS next week it is in the deal to swap the mattress with the one in the new trailer. The mattress that comes with it is pretty bad.

I may check the pump module to see if I can bypass the 120V side and feed it 12V (assuming it ultimately may run on DC anyway). I'll research it before I do anything.
