Propane Regulator

Post by flyman on 5/8/2009, 1:18 pm

I have a 08 QBBS.
I have two propane regulators on my trailer. One is the main regulator (with switch to change tanks)in the right propane compartment The other regulator is in the left propane compartment and has no controls. The propane bottle feeds into that regulator and then the line goes from that regulator to the main reg with switches. Does anybody have this setup with two regulators? Why?
All the trailers I have looked at have only one propane regulator.

I can't give you the reason why, but I can tell you that two regulators are the normal configuration when the fifth wheel has a propane bottle on each side.

My understanding is that they (RV builders) use a low pressure line to cross through the front basement area. This requires the second regulator, which is needed for the low pressure. I had trouble with my street side bottle not being reconginzed by the system and it required a new dual phase regulator because the old one could not recognize/read the low pressure from the street side bottle.

Yes, we all have that. Mine works fine. The handle points to the propane bottle you have selected. If the indicator is red, the valve has automatically switched to the other bottle, and the selected bottle is empty. Turning the handle to the full bottle will clear the red indicator.

I have only one. Which is a double stage. The left side tank is piped through to the right side which goes into one side, and right side tank goes into the other side top part of the regulator.

Propane Regulators

Post by flyman on 5/11/2009, 2:15 am

Thanks to everybody for the replys on 2nd propane regulator. I knew my trailer had two regulators but it worked fine so why mess with it until...this spring when I could get no propane to the trailer, but I had filled both bottles last fall. Yes both bottles still full, but very little if any, gas getting to regulators.
Turns out BOTH of the the short hoses from tank to regulator failed internally. Could not see any blockage, just no gas getting thru! What are the odds? My father-in-law had a 1973 Shasta, I had a 2001 trailer, and how many grills use the same type line?

The June 2009 Issue of The good Sam Club "Highways" Tech Topics page 20 Troubled LP Gas Switchover touches on the Gas regulator.
Can some one post pictures of the Dual Regulator system with regulator on both sides Question
The 2005 RLBS that we own has only one dual regulator on the right side. There no regulator on the left side.

Today I changed from one regulator to two.
I noticed that the left side POL had a very small hole and the right side was much larger. This was before the change over..
The new left side has the same size as the right side now. The POL is connected direct to the regulator Then have a 350 psi hose from the Regulator to the Crossover pipe.

Flyman... I've got the same symptoms you had... Left tank is full but can't pull any gas from that side and red indicator on switch...Which line failed you on the left side?? The short one between tank and left regulator??? I've exchanged tanks with no change... I've got an '08 and I can't believe the regulator went bad already let alone a line.... Thanks for any help, Greg

propane regulator

Post by dekorver on 8/6/2009, 12:33 am

Hi, I've been a member for awhile but just a lerker. I had the same problem with our "08 cat. The dealer removed the single stage regulator saying it reduced the pressure to the point that that the dual stage had trouble recognizing that tank. Worked fine but the switchover regulator went bad four months later.

Re: Propane Regulator

I have been tempted to remove the pressure regulator on the left side because most of the time the switch over valve will not fully switch to the left tank. The red indicator only half disappears and I suspect that it is because pressure from that side is not high enough. Is the left side regulator really required? Why does the line between the tanks have to be low pressure? Is there a safety regulation requiring this?

I have two. I don't depend on the auto switch. I keep one tank closed off so I know when a tank is empty. This way I always have at least one tank until I can get the other fill. I have had problems with the left side regulator and my generator not getting enough fuel. The 5500W Onan runs off propane. It's only a problem when the tank is less than 1/3 full at the fuel runs through the two regulators prior to getting to the Onan

I had change mine over to two regulators back the end of May. But I have change back to one regulator to get the system to work.

The reason for the two regulators is that if the line from the road side should have a leak it would not be a high pressure leak.

I had the same problem. I went to a propane service center. They couldn't understand why I had two and gave me a coupler. I removed the regulator on the drivers side and seems to work well as I did this last year. My main regulator now switches over quickly.
