LED tail light upgrades

Post by Mopar_Earl on 4/26/2009, 12:26 pm

Thought I'd share my upgraded tail lights. The pics are before, after, and the LED assy. Was easy and only took a few mins. Remove two screws, old lens, and bulb. Install LED assy and reinstall the same screws. I bought these LEDS from a local dealer for about 35 bucks each and the trailer takes 4. Not a cheap upgrade, but well worth it I think. New LED lights are very bright day and night. Also what is nice about the upgrades is you dont have to disturb the sealer around the tail light housing. If you trade up and the new trailer has the same tail light, you can keep your LEDs and put the lens and bulbs back on (if you saved them).

The LED assy are from Bargman the maker of the tail lights. Model 84/85.

I've been thinking of doing that also. I just wonder why the replacement modules cost more than replacing the whole light assembly. Thanks for the pics.

Warning.....The west coast models use a different taillight assembly than the unit shown above.

See below. It's the only picture I had.

Possibly a Bargman #92.

Same for the 2007 east coast models. My tail lights look more like jetskier. I'd wouldn't mind upgrading my lights to LED too for visibility. On mine the right rear lamp also doubles as the license plate lamp. Let me know what you find out.

I have the style 92 lights and just received my 36 LED 1157 bulb(red) replacements. I'll take some pics when I put them in and give you a brightness report. They were about $17 each and seemed to be the best I could find on the Internet.

Keith,

When you take the pics, can you take them of just the replacement bulb as well?

Thanks...

Where did you get them? I really want something brighter. I think we have the same lights.

I replaced the bulbs with the new LED and I give them a thumbs up. The instant on/off is very noticeable and a good saftey feature. The brightness seemed to be better than the regular bulb, but I will need to look at night to determine by how much. When I view at night I will grab some pictures to post.

I went ahead and ordered some LED for the marker lights (red and amber) and will let you know how those look. If they come out as I hope than I will go ahead and relight the rest.

Knowing that I won't being going down the highway ith a light out and not knowing it is another reason I'm willing to spend the $$. Later in the season I will change the interior lights over to LED's.

More to follow as I progress with this mod.

Happy Camping,

Keith

I ordered new tail light assemblies and have already been replacing some of interior lights. First were over sink and in bathroom. We all think of the electricity factor, but, the heat factor is also a good one to take in account. We can go out and leave the one over the sink on and have a night lite on when we get back.

Bob,

Our over the sink light is a small fluorescent fixture. Puts out a lot of light without much heat.

I do agree with your statement about the heat. In my old TT, the plastic light fixture covers were discolored and brittle because of the heat generated by the light bulbs. Do they make LED replacements for the bayonet style bulbs as well?

Yes they do. One of them is http://www.prudentrver.com/ledlamps.html. I have bought from www.superbrightleds.com/other_bulbs.htm They have led's in both daylite and cool white.

Marker lights are AWSOME!!

Post by keithbennett on 5/8/2009, 9:36 am

I received the LED marker lights today and went over to the storage lot and put on 2 amber and 2 red - WOW what a difference. In bright sunlight the difference is significant. I'm ordering the rest of the lights for the 5 red in the rear and the two on the front. I'll get some pics up this weekend (weather permitting). Here are the lights I bought. They are sealed and a 1 wrench install. The fit the same 3 inch space for the mounting screws as the originals.

Now look what you did: Spent more of my money! Was there a bunch of sealant behind the old lights? Did you use putty installing the new lights?

Re: LED tail light upgrades

Post by keithbennett on 5/8/2009, 1:50 pm

I figured you have so much money that I would simplify your life and get rid of some of it. I pulled the putty/caulk/silicone off and re did it with silicone. The units are sealed so the need to have it bullet proof is reduced. They also have a foam gasket with the new lights, so I just put the silicone on it to help with adhesion and to keep water from getting in the back of the new lights.

I'll try to get some good pics for you Scott, I want you to be happy with how I am spending your money.

Keith

Re: LED tail light upgrades

Post by robertz675 on 5/10/2009, 2:59 am

I too had the Bargman 92, which they have not made a replacement for yet. I got new ones at http://ledtrailerlights.com/stt/830xx.htm Including shipping it cost $74.00 for both. The left one has the license plate illumination, but there was no problem making the left one on the right, etc. Yo have to move the side marker light to the other side of the fixture. Let me tel you they are bright. They actually hurt your eyes when you are close and you put the brakes on. I didn't have to change my flasher module in the truck. I used some rope caulk behind the fixture and some silicone on the outside. White silicone filled the old holes, a small price yo pay. At the same time I replaced the basement locks with combination locks. I will post pictures soon.

We liked the new tail lights so much that I ordered all new led running lights for the WC like the ones that Keith showed above. The cheapest thing about this coming vacation is going to be the vacation. I am having my fuel tank replaced on the truck with a 52 gal. one. Clint

I just ordered the taillights as I like them better than a bulb replacement. Doug does a nice job with his LED business.

I found them.
The surface mount ( I think that is what we need, but I have to remove one of my old ones to check it out) two module unit is Bargman 47-84-610 with both sides Red tail/stop. It is 47-84-613 with one side red tail/stop and the other side back up.

They make three module units but I could not find a surface mount one.

Link to the Bargman catalog.

You can buy them here, but I am not sure the back up side is LED. Bargman makes it with the back up side either incandescent or LED; I want all LED so have to call PPL and see if they have that one.
Also, not sure if the PPL lights are the surface mount or recessed versions; have to call and check on that also.

I'm going to pull one of my old ones off tomorrow and check it out.

These Guys also have the complete light assemby, but it specifically says the back up side is incandescent. At this point, I have not decided how I want to go. It would be nice to have the back up lights built in like this instead of mounted on the bumper (or both).
