Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
Well, I finally did these myself on my 06 F350 PSD. Maxtor said it was really easy to do and boy was he right. My only issue was I didn't get a new window sticker to remind me when to change the oil next.
So I found someone who sells them, www.oilchangereminders.com
his e-mail is sales@oilchangereminders.com
They are $9.99 for 100 shipped, I got them in 3 days. He accepts paypal too.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
I'm due now. My brother says he'll do it for "his" shop cost at the dealer, but he hasn't come through yet. I may be doing it myself for the 25th time as we have our first camping trip of the year coming up this weekend. The hardest part is getting rid of the bad oil. Most oil change shops don't accept oil if they didn't change it. I usually dump it on the ground (just kidding!). I take it to the dump recycler which is way out of the way.

If you have a Pep Boys around, they will take it for free.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
I take mine to the recycle center / trash bin also. You could probably call one of the local oil recycling business' around and they'd take it also.
I bought the Fomoto Drain plug from Oldelmer1 a long time ago.
I love it. Flip the switch and drain your oil. Close it back and your done. I screwed it into a oil pan at my friends shop and theres not enough thread coming through to trap but just a small amount of oil,
Not enough to worry about. Probably enough to fill up a drinking straw.
On my Oil filter , I sharpened a old phillips head screw driver and punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and drain it. Makes taking the filter down a lot cleaner. I always managed to spill most of it before I started poking a hole to drain it.
Saves a good bit of money doing it yourself.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
I don't have a problem changing the oil myself, but my brother's cost is not much more than I can get the supplies and he can dispose it at the shop. I like the control knowing it's done right when I do it myself.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
My local walmart takes the oil without questions. I have a 15qt oil pan that I drain into with a plug in it. Load it up and take it back when I go to purchase oil the next time it needs changing and they dump it in the oil collection tank out back. I have even taken oil over there without making a purchase and they dump it with out a hesitation.
FYI for those that weren't aware, oil filters and fuel filters are available at your local IH dealer often times alot cheaper than you can pick them up for at the dealer or local parts store.

Phillip,
You have a spin on oil filter?
On the 6.0 its an element that sits on top of the engine, just take the cap off and pull the element out.

My local Walmart sells the oil elements for $18.95, but doesnt have the fuel filters. I did go to the local IH dealer and their oil elements were $19.40, and fuel filters, 2 or them, are $33.59.
If anyone needs the numbers, they are:
Oil Element - 1840752C91 - $19.40
Fuel Filters - 1847170C93 - $33.59
I also replaced the HFCM drain plug with one that sticks out a little further so if the Allen wrench strips it you can use a pair of pliers on it. Here's what it looks like:
http://www.itpdiesel.com/store.php/products/HFCM_DrainPlug
Its number from the same IH dealer is:
HFCM drain plug - 2589259C91 - $13.80
REMEMBER, THESE NUMBERS ARE FOR MY 2006 F350 WITH A 6.0L PSD..... YOUR 7.3, YMMV

Mines a old type spin on. I kinda like those the best.
Do you have to clean the oil out of the canister ? do you drain it to ?

No, the oil drains back down when the element is removed. Its hard to wipe the old oil our cause there is a spring and other stuff inside for the element to hold onto.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
Tom and I have the same engine and HFCM drain plug. We also buy IH and Donaldson oil and fuel filters. On our diesel engines it is very important to have good quality fuel filters. Kragen takes used oil, Napa takes used filters.
Saving a few dollars doing it yourself is good, but knowing that it was done correctly is priceless.
On some 6.0 Ford Powerstroke engines, the high pressure oil pump holds one quart of oil, that does not drain out and if you refill with 15 quarts of oil, you will have an overfill issue. It is best after replacing the oil filter to fill with 14 quarts of oil, then run the engine for a minute, then turn the engine off and let it set for 5 minutes and then check the oil level. Then add oil if necessary. After a few oil changes, you will know exactly how much oil you need to add to fill to the full mark.
I change oil every 5k and change fuel filters every 15k per the manual. If you live in harsh conditions or dusty roads, changing fluids more frequently is advised.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
I went to Walmart last night and bought Motorcraft 15W-40 oil in 5 quart jugs for $11.50 each. FL-1995 filter for $9.95. Took about 10 gallons of used oil to my brother's shop to recycle this morning.
I try to change my oil at 3500-4000 miles just because of the SOC (special operating conditions). I do some towing, stop and go commuting and live in dusty old Nevada.
The best thing I did was get the AIS air filter kit that came standard on the 6.0L engines. The filter breaths well and filters much better than the flat original.

I was just at our local Costco and they have DELO 400 LE 15W40 CJ-4 Motor Oil for $63.99 with an instant $15.00 off. Final cost is $48.99. That makes it $8.165 a gallon.
Pretty good deal if you belong to Costco.....

I sent my wife on a Costco run Monday night looking for the Delo, but they had just reorganized again. GRRR. That's one part I hate about Costco. I just went to Walmart since I knew they carried the filters.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
MAXTOR - I never have the problem you talk about. If you read the manual you have to wait 20 minutes before checking your oil on a level surface. If you wait at least 30 minutes when draining you have no oil over filled problems. According to Ford after this time ALL oil has drain to the pan. I just drained mine, added 15 quarts as required, fired it up, shut it down, let it sit for 20 minutes and I was right on the money. The 20 minutes is required by Ford for a correct measurement.

The procedure to drain the oil is to first start draining the oil pan, and while it is draining, unscrew the oil filter lid to release all the oil in the filter housing. I then wait until the oil that is coming out of the oil pan stops dripping. Then I install the oil filter, and then reinstall the oil pan plug. If you do it this way, you are going to get all the oil that is going to come out, removed. I have talked to Ford service personnel, and they say that on the 6.0 engine some oil does stay in the oil pump. In my engine, it is 1/2 quart. If you can get all 15 quarts of oil out of your truck, then that is great. On my truck, when the oil stops dripping from the pan, with the filter cap removed, I still have 1/2 quart of oil that does not come out, so I refill with 14 1/2 quarts.

Still have to wait the right amount of time to get all the oil out and the right amount of time before you check it. I just add 15. The extra will never hurt anything. Besides if it stays in the pump housing it will never show up on the dip stick.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
Some oil stays in the hpop and some stays in the turbo,,, and that is a good thing...If someone is a half quart high, it is not going to be a big thing. I build race car engines for a hobby, so I tend to be more of a perfectionist. My latest build was a 434 ci. Ford FE engine that with nitrous is 800 hp. Later this month, we will see what it will do in a 1960 Falcon in the 1/4 mile.

Re: Ford PSD Oil Change and Fuel Filter Change
i use Valvoline 5-40 extreme blue synthetic oil on my oil changes and my truck loves it.... with a bottle of Rev-X oil treatment.
i've noticed my motor is quieter and starts better in cold weather, and i use this oil all year long....it's a bit pricey at $28 a gallon but it's worth it....i've tried shell rotunda, AmsOil, Royale Purple and Mobile 1....but nothing seems to work like this valvoline synthetic does, for my PSD anyway.

I have no problem getting rid of the oil. It goes right into my fuel tank. 5:1 ratio with diesel and used motor oil it helps lower my fuel cost with no adverse effects.

how many times do you run your used oil through a filter before adding to your tank ?

I have a 5 micron filter on the truck so I only run it through a filter once before it's in the tank.
