Pickup diesel smog check for California?
It looks like we will be getting the shaft here in California AGAIN. Many of my friends removed and tossed their catalytic converters, and now they will be scrambling to find replacements. I have kept ours stock, because I knew that if California legislators could find a way to generate revenue, they would. It is slated for January 2010.
Another in the growing list of reasons to move from California.

That sucks...that is the nice thing about owning a diesel in my area, $14 safety inspections and I'm good to go!
So, when are you moving east?

Re: Pickup diesel smog check for California?
I'm not sure how they are gonna be able to pull that off, since 03 and older chevy diesel trucks came stock without a cat on the exhaust system. You would have to do some crazy tuning to be able to get the truck to run right to install one. Actually the 03 and older chevy's had no emissions on them, not until the 04.5 models or the LLY engine is when they started.

Re: Pickup diesel smog check for California?
None in counties other than Clark and Washoe. Just a opacity test is all.
I live in a rural county so I've never been tested.
The smog tests are based on the sticker under the hood. If you never had a cat and the sticker proves it, it doesn't matter as long as it passes emissions for that model year.
If you have a chip, a lot of folks say they test in stock or a heavy tow program (lowest HP). I replaced my entire exhaust in 2001. I have no plans to return to CA to live.

No sympathies here, it's the price you pay to be able to breath clean air. I'm in California, drive a diesel and have no problems with it.

CLEAN AIR,,, if you live in Southern Cal. you don't know what clean air looks like.
We left San Bernardino over 35 years ago, because you could taste the air. The only time you get to see the mountains is when a Santa Ana wind blows. I would land our Cessna 310 at Riverside Airport and wipe the smog off the wings. Being a pilot, I could see that most of the smog was coming from factories. Vehicles do pollute, but how the state mandates smog equipment is another story for another post. CARB is a huge revenue maker for the state. (California Air Resources Board)

Well 35 years is a long time. I can now see the mountains on a daily basis. I remember when I was going to USC back in the early 80's, you couldn't even see downtown LA less than five miles away. Now it's the odd day that you don't see it. Granted, we don't have the pristine air of the wilderness, but the majority of pollution is caused by vehicles, not industry.
In San Diego County, on-road motor vehicles account for 56% of NOx and 64% of Carbon Monoxide according to the latest data from CARB. Your catalytic converter is designed to get rid of these pollutants.

Re: Pickup diesel smog check for California?
We lived in the Riverside, San Bernardino area from 1946 until 1972. At that time Kaiser Steel was in Fontana, along with all the factories in Orange County, polluting much more than automobiles. We have gone back to Riverside for a few funerals, of family and friends and I did not see any improvement in air quality. I did see a huge increase in traffic and population. The Inland Empire area was much cleaner then than now. It seems that every house and shop has bars on the doors and windows, trash and graffiti. Sad, sad. We do not have the air quality problem that Southern Calif. has, nor do we have the people or traffic. Maybe, we should have different air quaility standards for each area. We are 600 miles north of you, and do not have the same problems. Many peope up here want to split the state into two states. Anything south of Red Bluff would be in one state, and everything from Red Bluff north would be the other state. You get to keep San Francisco.
Getting back on subject, it makes no sense when a vehicle passes the tail pipe test but is failed because it has an aftermarket part. Just one example of it being about revenue and not smog.

If your mod affects the emissions system and doesn't have a CARB sticker, then yes, you have unlawfully altered your emissions system, regardless of whether or not your tail pipe emissions are clean. I don't see a problem with making sure that any after market parts conform to CARB regulations. That's why I'm waiting for Banks to get their CARB certificate for their new diesel tuner for the 6.4l Power Stroke.

With the above statement, I am at a loss for words... And that is very unusual for me.
I hope everything works out with your Banks setup.
Happy motoring...

Re: Pickup diesel smog check for California?
I drive a 06 deisel and don't have a problem with smoging my truck when the times comes what i have a problem with is where you live in ca. determins if you have to smog or not, example the county i live in everyone has to smog there cars but 82 miles away in a different county , anyone who's car is registered in that county does not have to smog there car, or if you live in certain county's on the coast or northern ca. you don't have to smog either, so when congress people got together i assumed that they assumed people in those perticular county's would not drive across county lines into a smogged required county with there non-smogged required car. LOL LOL LOL

RDSKNFN-57 - A lot of that has to do with population and air currents. If u live in the hills u have less people, factories and better air flow. Down here in the valley we get a double dose. We have our own smog and we get some of the Bay area smog.
I have a 4 inch exhaust installed but keep my cat. With a little mod to system it will be installed before I smog. My cat will stay on now.
One thing about a Ford is when U take the cat off it takes twice as long to warm up. Tells U how much back pressure it creates. Diesel mpg also goes down. The government wants higher mpg and they put a cat on to lower it. Makes sense to me.

Re: Pickup diesel smog check for California?
You only need a non-commercial class A if your fiver has a GVW greater than 15,000 lbs. However, you do need to have an endorsement added to your regular class C license for a fiver with a GVW greater than 10,000 and less than 15,000 lbs (specifically, restriction 41). I have that and it didn't cost me anything, all I had to do was go to the DMV and take the non-commercial written test.
It adds the verbiage "RSTR: 41" under your vitals and on the back they print "41. MAY TOW FIFTH WHEEL RECREATIONAL TRAILER BETWEEN 10,001 AND 15,000 POUNDS GVWR"

Yes. It seems that our legislators sit around all day trying to figure out what they can do to make our lives more complicated. They all seem to know what is best for us, and do not hesitate to pass as many laws as they can. At 10,000 laws passed per year, at some time in the future, we will all be criminals due to violating one of them.

Wow you should see what London (U.K.) has in store for us in 2012
it is going to charge us £200.00 ($300) a day to go into the L E Z
(Low emission zone) with any vehicle that has a weight of more than
7800 Lbs that does not meet the Euro4 emission standards

I did not know that until about 3 months ago. Was looking for something else and I found that. I have found many people that do not know the law exists. Will play dumb for the time being. Driving this type of equipment for over 50 years. Do I need to go and see some 20 year old snot nose kid that can not wipe His butt to try and tell me how to drive now.
