Undermount Spare Tire Winch
I was browsing Lippert's webstore and found this by accident....

I've been wanting to relocate my spare underneath the WC for some time. I'm going to order one of these and give it a try.

Will do. I need to find a piece of tubing to span the frame now. I'm going. As usual, I will post pictures.

Re: Undermount Spare Tire Winch
jetskier does that include the wrench to crank up the spare tire. I was going to junk yard and look for a spare tire crankup to get the spare off of the rear bumper. Wait for your pictures.

No, but it looks like it has a shaft with a hole for a shear screw. I'm going to use a piece of EMT or small tubing for an extension and try to use the same crank handle from the front manual landing gear.
Here is their mount drawing. It uses a 35 1/2" extension. It shows how to mount it to a substructure and still have room to route the extension rod. The angles keep the tire sidewall from binding on the tube.

I mounted mine without the benefit of a winch.

Scott,
Looks good, but if I did that, it would melt from my genset.

Re: Undermount Spare Tire Winch
It's all finished. I'll post pictures in the morning. I ended up mounting it just a couple feet forward of the front axle. I didn't want to add too much pin weight so it was a good spot. The generator exhaust, gray and black water connections were in the way of the cross member any more forward.
I used a piece of 3"x1-1/2"x1/8" x 6' long piece of tubing for the cross member. I needed to lower the cross member below the gas line so I cut a couple 3" long pieces of tubing for an 1-1/2" drop spacer. I used some 1-1/2" angle to brace the edges of the tire and provide a gap for the winch shaft to pass between the tire and cross member. I made the shaft out of 1/2" EMT. I made a little coupler out of 3/4" emt with a pin welded to the 1/2 shaft. I designed it to use the electric jack backup crank to raise and lower the tire winch.

Re: Undermount Spare Tire Winch
jetskier,
Nice setup. One question, did you center the tire under the camper? could you have mounted it closer to the side, near the crank? Just curious!
Thanks...

I centered it, but you could mount it to the side if you wanted.

Re: Undermount Spare Tire Winch
Very nice, i had an under vehicle tire mount like that on a pick-up truck and of course it was raining the day i needed to change a flat.
I promised myself never again if at all possible. Unfortunatly my Ram 2500 has it that way, but my bumper mount is great with me on the Cat. Just my thoughts....

Re: Undermount Spare Tire Winch
I understand. To each his own.
I couldn't use the receiver mount bike rack at all because the tire and bike couldn't occupy the same space at the same time. When I double tow, I always bumped into the tire when hitching. Now the extra weight is in front of the axles where it should be.
Another benefit is not worrying about the tire cover anymore. I've lost one already.

Don't forget, less chance of your spare being stolen when it's under the trailer. Also its out of the sun and rain as well.

Very nice set-up Jetskier. I put mine standing upright in the front storage compartment last year before our big trip and it is still there. Working great for us so far. Ideally, I would like what you have.
