Pin box replacement
First topic message reminder :
Has anyone replaced their pin box? My QBBS came with a standard pin box. I think I would like to know how difficult it is to switch it out for one that isn't so rigid!

Re: Pin box replacement
Yep, my old Lippert pinbox is sitting in the back yard in case I upgrade trailers someday. Of course, I'll probably end up leaving the new one on just because of the hassle of taking it back off!

Re: Pin box replacement
I had a Demco put on 2 weeks ago. I have a local RV dealer and he put it on for me for 20 bucks. Took all of 20 minutes...of course, he had all the right tools. So far, it has stopped all of the chucking......I have been surprise at it performance. I figured it would eliminate 95% of the problem, but I experience no chucking anymore.
. I have very pleased with it.

Re: Pin box replacement
Just completed the installation of the 5th Airborne Sidewinder. Aside from some bruised hands and a blood blister, the installation went smoothly. Today I will line it up with the truck and put the wedge in to keep it from turning at the king pin. With my new Reese 16K hitch in the truck, I'm looking forward to uncomplicated towing. By the way, I purchased the unit from e-trailer at $1497.00, the same unit at Camping World (Presidents Club price) is over $2300.00. Where' s the value?

Wow...that's a huge discrepancy. Makes you wonder about CW sometimes!

Re: Pin box replacement
We're going to have to replace our pin box. I actually said, "I'm beginning to think I don't like trailer camping" one day as we were driving down a particularly bumpy road. Oh, shame on me for saying that.

Re: Pin box replacement
The 5th Airborn with the sidewinder may be the best investment I have made with regards to the 5th wheel. We have put about 700 miles on it since leaving June 17th. They have been worry free, smooth miles. Another advantage is that I can keep the rails for my toneau cover on the truck without any damage from the pin box on the trailer. The sidewinder allows the truck to turn 90* without concern. Great product!

Re: Pin box replacement
I ordered my new 32QBBS with the Rotoflex option. It was a $210 option.
Speaking about turning 90* without worry, Forest River claims that their front cap on the Wildcat is designed for short bed trucks to be able to turn 90*. Is there much truth to their claim??

Re: Pin box replacement
I have a 2008 28RKBS. I also have a Hijacker 24-UL-16 which is a standard non sliding hitch. I have had the hitch twelve years and just moved it to my new truck from my previous truck. I have no cab clearance issues. On the back of the pin box there is an angle piece that sticks out to the side. This does get close to the truck bed rails depending on turning conditions. I have 6 1/2" clearance between the 5th wheel and the truck bed. The trailer sits perfectly level. I do have some adjustment left on the hitch and the pin box. I am going to raise the hitch 1" to see if it helps.

I've got a 07' model 32qbbs with a 4 door f350 short bed 01' model SRW. I've made some serious turns ,, Almost 90* . and the leave the hitch in Tow position. I can make some pretty tight turns without hitting the cab. it gets close you just have to keep a eye on it or pull up and reposition.

Re: Pin box replacement
I've made some not too serious turns and stopped, got out to look and the CAT was almost touching the truck. If I think I need to slide, I stop and get out and slide it back.
Better safe than having a busted out window, or a dent.

Re: Pin box replacement
The models '07 and before have the previous style cap, some of the early '08's too. From what I read, they changed the front cap to what it is today to enable 90* turns with a short bed truck eliminating the need for a slider hitch. I agree though, I think I too would be getting out and checking no matter what style of 5th wheek I had.

Re: Pin box replacement
My brother parked his 40' Cherokee Wolf Pack TH in his cab of his new truck a couple months back. He was frustrated backing into a tight site and nailed the corner. It's been an experience for him getting it repaired. It's been to a couple shops already.
I told him to get a long bed. I never have any worries. What's another 16" anyway?

But the sidewinder is about $45K cheaper than a new truck!

Re: Pin box replacement
too true. That's why I still have my 2000. It will be 9 years next week since I bought it. Just rolled over 90k miles.
Just paid off the wife's Expedition yesterday. It's a good feeling.
I'm still contemplating the Demco, but I want to wait till I save up the $$$ for one.

I've never had an issue with surging; maybe the way it is loaded or maybe I just don't know any better. How much does one of those fancy pin boxes cost?
