New Desk - Newest Chairs
We've been trying to figure out how to have the perfect computer desk, and finally think we've got it. Our first was a small folding table that sat in front of the sofa. Our second was a converted printer stand that sat on one of the dining room chairs - it was awkward and in the way. Here are pictures of the new one.

Closed.

Open. We can pull the chair out into the room quite a bit, and still get around it. If we have company and want more room to move around in, we'd probably stow the computer and fold the desk top down.

The laptop case and cords will fit in this lower storage area.

This is where we stow the legs. There is also enough room to store a few other things.
NEW PHOTOS -

This is the desk and computer all set up for use. We replaced the existing swivel rockers with a set of office chairs.
These are the new chairs.

The gray chairs were very comfortable, but we didn't care for the color. We found these at Staples on-line. The color goes very well with the upholstery in the 'Cat.

Great work. The design is very similar to those found on private jets!

Re: New Desk - Newest Chairs
I designed and sketched it. I've never been in a private jet. :)
Scruffy measured, cut the pieces, assembled it, and made it work out the way I pictured it. Much of the inside wood was scraps. He used plywood (birch, I think) for the pieces that show. The legs were an old closet dowel (rod) we weren't using. We used some leftover stain, it's a close match, but not perfect - Minwax, Golden Pecan.

Very nice. Nifty piece of work.
We have been looking for a while now for a small coffee table type of thing. Everything we see that we like is more expensive than we want to go. For now we are using a small plastic fold up table from CW.

Re: New Desk - Newest Chairs
Scottz,
We just set it up like that to take the picture. When we're actually using it, the cord will have to hang over the converter cabinet.
We have new chairs for the 'Cat. Hopefully we will be able to get the old ones out and the new ones in.

Re: New Desk - Newest Chairs
Nice desk - apparently the bottom of the rear window in the 29rl is higher than in my 27rl. I went out to see how a setup like that would look in ours, and I'd be sitting on the floor at a desk in that same spot in ours. The bottom of our rear window is barely above the top of the converter cabinet.
Have you thought about adding a 110v outlet under the power center on the same side of the converter cabinet as the desk? That would solve having the cord run across the converter cabinet top. You could probably daisy chain off of the outlet on the other side of the converter box with just a few feet of electrical wire.......

Tater,
Did you happen to find studs in the wall to screw the desk too, or are they screwed to the paneling only?
VERY NICE JOB TOO!!!!

Re: New Desk - Newest Chairs
Tom,
Scruffy used his high-tech stud finder. Then used wall anchors in the paneling. I think the stud finder lied.
The 2x4 board across the top is fastened to the wall, the up and down supports are fastened to the 2x4 and to the floor. It's kind of hard to tell from the picture that the screws at the bottom are at an angle going into the floor. The desk is very solid.
Here is a picture of the framework.

We changed chairs. Found something that matched the upholstery better. Look above in the first post if you'd like to see them.

Scruffy and Tater - If you have some kind of measurements and plans sending them to me would be appreciated. Email them to me if you want to. Take anything to help the area we have on the other side.

The above photos are all we have in the way of instructions. I think these same photos are in our Picasa album (click the link in our signature), along with a few explanations. We didn't have measurements, I just made a little sketch. Then Scruffy measured, cut, and figured out how to make it work.
