Emergency flasher/jumper for camper lights

Post by oldelmer1 on 4/12/2008, 7:08 am

Here is the way to make your camper driving lights come on. If you use the flasher unit, they will flash, if you use the wire jumper, they will stay on all the time.

I didn't see oldtimer's picture at first. Thought I had something fresh. Oh well at least I'm learning to post pictures. This site is much easier than the other.

extra jumpers

Post by grover on 4/12/2008, 12:20 pm

Make sure that you have extra jumpers there is always other campers wanting to know how you makes the lights come on, so it's good to have some extras just to give out.

You can get them at any automotive parts store. I got mine at the dealer supply store.

Thanks for the flasher info, I am going to get one for the glove box on the way home.

A little improvment on the jumper:
get a male plug assembly and jump the two terminals inside the plug. That way all that you have to do is plug it in, no exposed wire hanging out.

Ok, I have to ask the obvious "Newbie" question here????

Why would you want your camper lights on or flashing in the camp ground?

Question Question Question

Because it's festive. It could also be annoying to your fellow campers.

If you MUST leave your trailer on the side of the road while you drive into town to get a new tire (or other part), your trailer will be very visible with the lights flashing. This happened to us years ago - before ERS.

I use a standard 10 amp fuse with the blades bent just a bit to fit in the connector. This will keep them on constantly.
I do have a jumper with flasher for newbies. Then i give them the
"What did you do, Did you break it? Should have bought a Cat" while it's flashing. Try it, it's a riot.

This does not work on my Cat. 2008 29rlbs. Tried everything I could come up with. I wonder why when all the other folks say it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Question scratch There is a new item on the market called plug-n-light for about $25 but a 10 inch piece of wire is a lot cheaper since I already have it. study

I'm hoping that this pix tacks on to the message cause it's only the 2nd time I've tried this. Its a diagram of our 7-pin trailer connectors, looking at both the trailer plug and the truck recepticle. I thought that we could all use a refresher on just which pin activate which circuit. Obviously, pin # 3 controls not only the tail lights but also the running lights too.

Have you checked with a volt meter that your battery is actually putting power out on the 12v pin? There is something not hooked up right if you can't make this work.

I agree with Brad, check the pigtail to see if you have 12Vdc. If not, check all of your circuit breakers to make sure nothing is tripped.

Maybe you were on the wrong pins; easy to do. Or perhaps, for some reason, your cat's batteries are not connected to the trailer plug for charging. All this mod does is take the 12V feed from the trailers batteries (the one that connects to your truck to charge your trailer batteries when the truck is hooked up) and feeds it back to the clearance/tail lights.

The tail light connector does not change from year to year; ie: I should be able to hook my truck to anyone's trailer and have the proper lights.
