TX, AR, OK, MO, LA?

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 2/23/2009, 5:17 am

Frank L suggested a rally. I think that would be a great idea, but making plans for a big rally at a time and place that would be convenient to all of the members would take some time. So, in the meantime, some smaller meets might be arranged.......

Here's one. Anyone interested in having a get-together for members in these states (TX, AR, OK, MO, LA) - and anyone else who wants to attend? Location could be in the Texarkana area, or Lake Quachita near Hot Springs, or Southeast Oklahoma, or the Table Rock Lake area near Branson. Nothing too organized. We all agree on a location and campground, then everyone would be responsible for making their own reservations.

That sounds like a good idea to me. Any of those locations work for us.

Where in Colorado do you work in a campground? My wife and I excepted jobs working at a campground in Pueblo,Co for this Summer. This will be our first try at campground working. We have been RVing for over 40 years so have seen just about everything that can happen in a campground hopefully. Happy travels. Jim

We would possibly be able to attend. If nothing else, we could just be there for weekend. Vacation schedules are already used up for me this year.

I'm in...the summer would be better for us as I have a daughter in high school. I am willing to travel, western Arkansas or eastern Oklahoma would be a good central meeting place for the group.

We have family in the Tulsa area (and Austin). If a gathering occurred when we were able to be in the area, we would try to attend. As Scruffy and Tator said in a different post, we have ourselves pretty well booked with family travel, home projects and hoping to pull off a trip to Nova Scotia area late summer/fall.

Still would be great to put faces to names of some of the form people

I'll noimate Beavers Bend, but of coarse, there is the issue of no reservations.

Brad,

I was thinking of Beaver's Bend as well, but as you mentioned there is the no reservation policy. It would be a great place.

I will bring my big cast iron pot and make jambalaya!!!

It is located at Hochitown, ok. It is actually Beavers Bend State Park. It is on the river just below the Broken Bow Lake. The park is rather famous for its trout fishing. They also have a little train for the smaller people to ride. I think there is horse rides also, but I have never looked into them. Lots of hiking trails, little logging museum, very relaxing camground!!

Being retired, we can be pretty flexible about where we meet. Since it should be on a weekend, we'd definitely need reservations. We'd probably arrive on a Thursday and leave on Sunday. Mark, we love jambalaya. :)

Gary and Glenda,
We've started planning a trip to New England for this fall. With one night in New Brunswick. Heck, if we get that close, we should go there. We should probably go into Nova Scotia, too - same reason, if we're that close, we should go there. Maybe our paths will cross.

It's still tentative, depending on health factors.

Scruffy and Tater

We went to New England in 2001, our first retirement travel, and took 7 weeks round trip. It was a great trip, very relaxing, great color and interesting sights, and we only went into Canada at Niagra Falls, which is the really nice view. This time my sister and BIL are planning on going with us (I hope their 401K will hold up), and we are looking at going into Canada sooner and going through Quebec. I want to go all the way to Newfoundland, and then work our way back, coming into the states in Maine and then seeing what we can of New England. (We truely enjoyed the Maine to upstate New York area and want to try to see some of it again.) I figure if I am going that far, we might as well go all the way this time. If we run out of time (snow flies) we will have the far end visited and can plan another trip in a later year. We are still trying to determine when we can get away, etc. My guess is that we will probably see Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island before much color change, just to get a little farther south before any potentially bad weather arrives.

Hope we both get there and maybe we will see you along the way. Always looking for Wildcats on the road.

We've decided to skip the New England trip this year - will do that in 2010.

Regarding the TX, AR, OK, MO, LA meet. We're going to be busy traveling in April and May. Beginning in June, if all goes as planned, we will be visiting the Grove, OK and the Eureka Springs, AR areas. We'll check out some private campgrounds and see if any would be appropriate for our needs.

Anyone else who is interested could check out some campgrounds (that take reservations) in other areas (or the same areas) and report here if any seem like a good spot for a meet.

I'd like some input regarding a time to have our meet. August before school begins? The weather might be uncomfortably hot, but maybe the evenings will cool off a bit. Late September when it's a bit cooler?

Mid-October would be bad for Scruffy and me, as we plan on attending the Covered Bridge Festival in Parke County Indiana.... but, we might be able to do both if one follows the other, with a couple days travel time between the two.

I hope we can pull this off, it would be great meeting some fellow members, including members from other states.

Tater

Tater,

I agree with you, it would be nice to have a rally. For us, June & July would be the only months we could do any traveling during the week. My daughter plays in the HS band and they start two-a-days (it's not just for football) on August 3rd I believe. Of course I'm trying to schedule a trip to Durango, CO sometimes in June (I'm hoping that will be my Fathers Day gift).

One thing about planning something like this, someone just needs to pick a CG and date and see who can make it. There is no way to pick a time and place that will fit into everyone's calendar.

Do we start nominations for the Rally Chief?

For a campground we have been to Wanderlust in Eureka Springs Arkansas. Very nice campground and I'm sure they would be very accomadating to a groups needs.

As far as a time. Somebody is just going to have to pick something and then I'll know if we can make it or not. My schedule is never firm for more than a week at a time.

We have stayed at the Kettle Campground in Eureka Springs. It is ok, lots of shade but sites are a little tight. The wanderlust is newer, well laid out and probably the better location.

We have commitments in May and July and plan to leave in early August for Newfoundland, returning in late October. June is going to be required at home to finish a couple of projects. This means that we probably wouldn't be able to make it, but certainly hope you all can put it together.

Tater, sorry to hear you have delayed the New England trip. If you are still coming through Las Cruces in May, maybe we can make contact. At this time we plan to leave for Kansas on May 13. This may be sooner than you will arrive here?

It looks like we'll be staying in Las Cruces on May 12. Unless you are super efficient with your planning and packing, you probably won't be able to make it.

I've looked at the web pages for Wanderlust and Kettle. Maybe we'll stay at Wanderlust and visit Kettle. There is also a KOA nearby that we'll stay at or visit.

There are three campgrounds in the Grove, OK area that we'll check out on a separate trip.

This meet doesn't have to be too well organized. I hesitate to call it a rally. I can set a couple dates for us to vote on. Also, I think everyone can make their own reservations. Beyond that, we can be creative with activities, or just mingle (and eat) - it really depends how much time we have together. Maybe someone will want to spend a few days in the area, maybe someone else will only be able to make it on Saturday. Scruffy and I would probably arrive on Thursday or Friday, and leave on Sunday or Monday.

My mouth was watering for Mark's jambalaya. Wink

Tater,

Don't build up the anticipation too much, I don't want you to be disappointed.

I looked at the Wanderlust RV Park. From the pictures it seem nice and the rate is reasonable. For us, the trip is about 6 hours, not bad at all. Let's pick some dates and get this ball rolling! Wink
