Feather bed Vs Memory foam topper

I vaguely remember sleeping on a feather bed as a little kid at Grandma's house, but haven't given any thought to adding one to our exsisting mattress for comfort Vs a memory foam topper until just recently. So I'm curious, do any of you have experience using a feather bed for comfort Vs a memory foam topper?

Personally I like the comfort of the memory foam (at least 2" thick).

We had the feather topper in the camper and it was great at first, but then it started getting divots in it. Tried to shake them out and covered the cat in feathers (that was 1.5 years ago and we still have a few random feathers floating around). We had both come down with a stomach bug while camping, so when we got home, I sterilized the camper and washed the feather bed topper in the process, VERY BAD IDEA!!! Those things stink when they get wet just for your knowledge. Any rate, we went to Sam's and got a queen size mattress topper and have never looked back, it is by far the most comfortable thing we have ever slept on and that is with the stock mattress in the Cat.

Memory foam, definitely. We've slept on feather beds when we were younger, and the memory foam is definitely more comfortable.

TC, I think you answered your own question. The great thing about sleeping on a feather bed is the memories! I'm with you, sinking in the middle of a feather mattress made for some good sleeping! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

I find myself torn by this subject...

I've been pricing 2" memory foam toppers for awhile now; $250.00 or more for the "real deal" in queen. I've also beening pricing feather beds at Overstock, where I'm seeing 300 thread count outer cover, individually baffled sections to prevent the down from de-compartmentalizing , 10% goose down and 90% duck down, 5" depth with gusseted sides, plus an outer protective cover. All for... $99 :tongue:

They also advertise that feather beds adjust to the ambient temps to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

Im am very tempted to give it a try.

We replaced our mattress with a good quality one before the last trip sure made a big difference

You can find 2" memory foam toppers for around $100 or less on sale.

There are lots of places that run them on sale all the time.

We order on-line from a company called Domestications ( www.domestications.com ). Their prices are pretty reasonable. Right now they have a 3" memory foam for $216.

Thanks for the link Bev. I've heard of this company; I'm thinking we used to get Christmas catalogs from them. Anyway, I'll check their web site out this evening.

My wife bought a Very expensive couch that has the feather cushions about 5yrs ago,,, I begged her to get a Lazy Boy,,,, No way,,,, The couch is Crap to say it nicely.... No way I'd buy a feather mattress. I've been trying to get the dog to chew a hole in it,,, She's been chewing like crazy and still hasn't gotten the feather prize yet..... I can say its some great material covering it....

I remember sleeping at my Grandmothers in the 60's when I was a kid , she still had the out house and the chamber pots for nights, white bucket with the red ring.....
But She would Tuck us into bed and Pile about a 100lbs worth of her hand made quilts on us, You could barely breath they were so heavy.....
But you stayed warm after the fire went out....

My grandparents had a farm in Mississippi (cotton and soybeans). I think maybe the change-over to more modern modes of comfort and convenience came slower to folks living in the rural south; or so it seemed. I too remember the hand-made quilts AND the procelein chamber pot WITH the red ring! Must have been standard issue. And that was still in the 60s

I'll bet most people who have heard the phrase, "they didn't even have a pot to p*ss in", never gave any thought as to its origin. :P

Then there was the well with the crank handle to draw water from, and the fresh milk that Grandma would let me churn all morning long to separate the butter and cream from the milk. I thought it was the best thing ever!

I have to share a personal experience as an 8 yr old staying the summer with the grandparents. Grandma had just collected the eggs and decided that one hen in particular wasn't laying any more, so that chicken suddenly got put on the evening menu. I was in the yard with her while she rung its neck, except the head snapped off and the chicken got up on its feet and started after ME!! Anywhere I'd run, it would after me, and any way I'd turn, it'd turn in the same direction. I was traumatized by the "demon chicken", and couldn't even eat my supper that night!! TRUE STORY!!

It's amazing how much they could do with so little, and still be happy. The slower paced life was good for the mind while the hard steady work was good for the body. And, having real "neighbors" and not just stangers living down the road from you, was somehow good for the soul.

Thanks for the laugh...I sure needed that today! I have very similar memories, the white porcelain pot with the red ring. I thought my grandparents just used that pot, didn't realize that was its intended use! My grandfather called it the slop jar!!!

Yep, my aunt and my grandmother both did the ring the chicken neck,,,, had to cut the pig's, bale the hay,,,, where were those child labor laws back then ? I actually learned a lot..
Bet you wouldn't catch to many women even thinking about ringing a chickens neck these days......

I think one of the fondest memories of my grandmother was sitting in the back door of their house which was a log cabin that had those big half cut logs' for steps,,,, But I can still remember me sitting in the door and her sitting behind me churning butter. That was the coolest thing to me back then.

If you want to do it right, get a Select Comfort, you will never regret it. AND, the big plus is that you will save weight. I gould not believe how much the old mattress weighed until I took it out.

Would have bever thought that the select comfort is lighter than a regular mattress...

Neither did I until I carried out the old mattress with its steel springs. The new one weighs 23lbs, according to the mfg. I have a bad back and shoulder and at least now when I go on a trip I wake up able to move.

I'm thinking......this might be an entry on the "to-do" list.

We have slept on a select comfort mattress for about 7 years now (bed at home). It is a very comfortable mattress and we really like it. I agree on the weight, the mattress on our king size bed is very light and my wife can easily move it around.

The only drawback is the mattress is kind of expensive, but I guess you get what you paid for. We added a 3" foam mattress pad to the Cat mattress and it made all the difference in the world.

Campingworld will put them on sale for $999.00, but if they are at a RV show they normally knock off an additional $100.00. If you couple that with coupons you can save some extra. We got ours at the Tampa RV show and also got 4 tickets to Daytona for a NASCAR race worth $48.00 each which took care of 2 birthdays. Now is the time to look around.

For the price of a queen select comfort, this ole' miser can buy a brand new queen pillow top mattress AND a high grade topper; and still have $300.00 left over to do all sorts of things with:

Well, guys. I must say that the original cat mattress is a terrible thing to sleep on. It was the ONLY downfall that I could come up with when we bought our cat. Within weeks of her ownership, I purchased a down topper. I have a "good" quality on the bed at home and thought that this is a good way out....I now have a regular sized queen memory foam mattress in the cat. My dh and I love it! Just wish I could afford one for the house. I ordered it from overnight mattress.com. This winter seems to have been a long one, and am anxiously waiting for the cat to come out of storage. I promised my kids that when it did come out that we WOULD spend the night in the yard sleeping in the cat.

We did the 3" memory foam right on top of the bed that came in the cat...works just fine! Only problem we have is that when we slide the room in the very bottom of the bed won't fit under the closet...so it pushes it back just a bit so it fits...not a big deal though.

We are at Ft Wilderness and the new mattress made a difference. We both slept through the night until this morning. It is well worth the money.
