Transmission

Post by grover on 2/17/2009, 6:14 am

Well went to pass someone the other night and slipped the c3 clutch plates on my transmission, looks like a rebuild job before WDW trip this summer. Looks like I can have it rebuilt bigger and better with a shift kit as well, the only thing that will be stock will be the torque converter. It'll be a towing trans that can take an extra 125 horsepower from stock and I usually only run an extra 85 so that should be good. gonna cost me around 2,000 to get it done.

Remember to have your torque converter, trans cooler, and lines flushed before you hook everything back up, or you might loose another trans.
I love our manual transmission.

I can't remember the name of the kit 'm pretty sure it's not a suncoast. I will
know more once I get ready to do the build. The guy doing the work is Eric Merchant from Merchant automotive he specializes in the dmax He does most of the mods for the guys on the diesel place. His dmax he only uses for the truck pulls now it has around 975 RWHP. That truck is crazy, but I told him what I was planning on using the truck for and he said he had the perfect setup for my truck.

grover,

You can't go wrong with having Eric build your Allison, the guy is good. What name do you post under at "The Place"? I post as MaxRock over there as well.

I use grover266,I have to use the old roadracing number on that site. That site is great for learning anything about your truck. Eric is only 40 minutes from my house so that makes it very convienant

You are lucky to have someone like Eric that close. Takes a lot of pressure off knowing he is close by.

I talked to Eric on the phone today for a while he got all these mods he wants to do to my truck I told maybe after the tranny job is done we'll look at some other stuff. I'm thinking of doing the boost stick to get the boost up around 33 psi, they say that'll help keep the egt's down as well.

Since you are going to upgrade the tranny, why not change the torque converter while you have the patient open? That'll let you make more power without worry.

The trans guy told me for what I'm gonna do with the truck I wouldn't need to change the torque converter. As long as I'm not gonna go crazy with horsepower or run the drag strip or sled pull he said the stocker would be fine, plus cut the cost quit a bit.

I had Merchant rebuild my trans after the dreaded C3 slippage. I had him re-build it with new clutches a trans-go and a new triple disc torque converter. He gets TC's built for him now. The converter added about $1300 but it's a 3 hour drive for me and i didn' t want to have to go back. He also did the pump rub mod on the transfer case while i was there. I got there at 8 A and was out around 6 P. He's very patient and doesn't mind if you hang around and watch him go to work.
I don't drive the truck that much other than towing so the first few times out with the WC it would shudder pretty hard whent the TC locked up but now it's pretty smooth.
I run an Edge on mine and had never taken it past level 3. On the test drive out of his shop he threw it into level 5 and gave her a go. Suprised, I said will it handle that. He said, no problem.
