Chat Abbreviations

Now that our chatroom is up and running, we might want to use abbreviations to save ourselves a few keystrokes. Here is a short list of the thousands of abbreviations that are out there. Some of these are used in text messages. Even if you don't use abbreviations, you might want to know what someone else said. :)

AFK - Away from keyboard
BCNU - Be seeing you
BRB - Be right back
BTW - By the way
COS - Change of subject
CYJ - Cool your jets
FWIW - For what its worth
GAL - Get a life
GDRLH - Grin, duck, run like heck
GMAB - Give me a break
GMTA - Great minds think alike
GR - Get real
HAND - Have a nice day
HIT - Hang in there
HTH - Hit the hay
IMO - In my opinion
IMHO - In my humble opinion
KBIMD - Keyboard in mouth disease
JIC - Just in case
JMHO - Just my humble opinion
KISS - Keep it simple stupid
LLAP - Live long and prosper
NB - Newbie
PITA - Pain in the... ooops! I meant PITN - Pain in the neck
ROFLMAO - Rolling on floor laughing my butt off
LOL - Laughing out loud
TTYL - Talk to you later
TTYS - Talk to you soon

Wish I could memorize all of those. Back in 1993, there was a person on the old old Prodigy who compiled a list of abbreviations - I printed the list and it took something like 20 pages. I think I threw it away when we moved from Oklahoma back to Texas. Some of the abbreviations were downright nasty. :roll:

If need be, I'll print a cheat sheet if I want impress everyone in chat. Wink

DW = darling (or dear) wife

other family members:

DH = darling husband
DS or DD = dear son or dear daughter
DM, DF - dear mom or dear father
MIL, FIL, DIL, SIL - mother, father, daughter, son -in-law

It is an efficient way to carry on a conversation with many different people. We use IM at work a lot and I find it is an effective use of time. Does lack the social interaction, but that's for after work! Wink
