Tire pressure monitoring.

Post by Big Dave on 2/1/2009, 4:03 am

I've been looking at this new system. Camping world also has it but it's a bit more expensive even with the members discount. I pull several trailers and have had flats before and never knew it. Fortunately I've never had any damage because the tires have stayed together but I know my time is coming.http://www.amazon.com/Hopkins-30100VA-nVision-Pressure-Monitoring/dp/B001JR65HU

I will let you know. I have the same one in transit to me. I have never had a problem either, but they came on my truck and I really enjoy the feature. I was at Camping World yesterday for a recall on my refrigerator and had them change all of my valve stems to metal. That was $138.00, but it is cheap insurance. I will let you know how the monitors work out.

Would you just get a set for the trailer or get a total of 8 for trailer and truck?

I've only had one tire failure and it was quick to let me know when it turned loose. The good thing about one of these monitoring systems it would warn you when the tire pressure went low. Possibly allowing you to stop before the tire exploded. Could be some relatively cheap insurance.

The best benefit I could see is that it would tell you if you have a bearing seizing up.... It would send the tire pressure up I would think.... getting hot,,, You'd probably notice a difference before the bearing started smoking.... ? OR would you ?

You can get it off of ebay for $275 shipped. I have thought about getting a monitor. I had a tire with a nail and drove way to far with a underinflated tire.

Rhino,

I don't have a monitoring system either, but the first blow out the monitor could have prevented would pay for the system. I would think it would alarm long before the tire blew, if the cause of the blowout was due to under inflation and not a big bang!

I put on the Hopkins this past weekend and it gave me, within 2 lbs. the pressure that my gauge showed. Just for fun I think that I am going to put them on my truck and compare the findings with my GM system. That should tell something.

Re: Tire pressure monitoring.

Post by oldelmer1 on 3/7/2009, 1:46 pm

I just bought the Pressure Pro unit from Costco, Installed it onto the camper. Seemed to work good, but 1 of my tires was down to 61# after a few hours. Reading the instructions, says you might have to hold the valve stem with pliers and make sure the sending unit is secure. So I refilled the tire up to 65# and re-tightened the sending unit. So we'll see what happens tomorrow.

I did try putting the sending units on my truck, but the 2 on the passenger side wouldn't tighten up enough to stop the air from leaking out. The valve stem was spinning around as I tried to tighten up the sending unit, and its so short that I cant get pliers on it.

Scott,
They give you 6 sending units, and the unit can monitor up to 16 sending units. Here's the link:

Re: Tire pressure monitoring.

Post by oldelmer1 on 3/11/2009, 9:23 am

I went looking for tire valve stem extensions today, didn't really find any that would work. When I got back home, I thought I would try to put the sending units on my truck again. And what do you know, they went right on and tightened right up. HMM.....

Of course the pressure wasn't right, so I had to take them off again and put more air in.

Its amazing how the air pressure fluctuates with ambient temperature. Seems to be 1 pound for every 10 degrees. So, I guess I'll leave them on for now and see what happens.

How does the monitors work on a HUMMER ? is it something similar or a line connected to the wheel ?

I would think on any vehicle that has a built in pressure monitor, the wireless sensors are located on the inside of the rims.

My wife's 05 Tahoe has the on-board tire pressure monitoring system. It amazes me how much the air pressure changes from the cold tire reading to the hot tire pressure reading. The pressure may change 6-8 PSI. It is a neat feature, has saved us a couple of times when the tire pressure drops due to rapid changes in ambient temperature.

I thought a Hummer could pump the tires up also ? Like going in the sand you could air down, then on hard turf air back up ?

Automatically??? Like just push a button and they pump up without having to connect an air hose?

I have no idea.... THAT WOULD BE PRICELESS!!!!!!

I was thinking that one of the civilian models had that option.?

I'm almost positive I've seen it on a surplus military hummer.

I am planning on purchasing a tire pressure monitor system for the Cat in the future. It's been awhile since anything was posted on this forum about this subject. I would like if those of you who have been using a TPS for a while could be so kind as to post what model you are using and how you like it. Thanks in advance for your input!!

Re: Tire pressure monitoring.

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 4/7/2010, 5:08 am

After two blowouts and two flats (in campgrounds) we decided we had to do something. The second blowout we had did major damage to the trailer. Fortunately, it was covered by our insurance. We had to pay a deductible. The following WildcatCamperForum page shows the damage, and some comments regarding tire pressure monitors.

We bought the tst and have taken one big trip with it. We had it set too sensitive, and the alarm sounded several times. After talking with a couple people, and making some adjustments, the monitor seems to be working very well. We have them on the truck and trailer. If these things can alert us BEFORE the big blowout, they'll be worth every penny spent.
