Rear view camera.

Post by Big Dave on 1/20/2009, 3:04 pm

I know this has been talked about before but I found one at Sams wholesale club today for $100.00 but I couldn't find any information about how far away from the monitor the camera would work. Nothing on the box and nothing on the internet.

Does anyone else have this unit or have you tried it?

I may pick it up in a few days and give it a try. Worse case scenario I would just use it on the truck. I'm always having to hook up to two of my work trailers by myself.

I'll let everyone know if it works if and when I get it.

Sounds like a good idea. Let me know if you get one and it works. It will save me sending Karyn out in the rain.

Scruffy has wanted a rear view camera ever since we bought the trailer. Wireless seems the way to go. $100 is an amazing price. I did a quick search on Google, and found a question in a Class B forum about this camera. Makes me think maybe it wouldn't reach all the way to the back of a trailer. I think I'll do more searching.

I'm planning on getting back into motorcycle riding next fall. At that point, I'll purchase a "trailer" of sorts (someone posted a pic of the one I want, it attaches to the receiver hitch and has a single rear swivel wheel on the back) to haul the M/C. Then I would put a rear view camera on the Cat to keep an eye on the bike.

I hope someone responds with some actual experience with this setup. The price is good, hopefully the performance is as well.

Re: Rear view camera.

Post by Big Dave on 1/22/2009, 1:24 pm

Ok.......I bought it tonight on the way home from work. Here is what I know so far.

There is no mention of distance anywhere.

There is 15 feet of cable from the camera that goes to a transmitter. There is 7 feet of power cable for the transmitter.

The monitor has a power cable that is about 6 feet long with a cigarette lighter plug on it.

I'm thinking that I can mount the camera and run the cable under the cat as far forward as the cable will allow and place the transmitter there inside of some kind of water tight bag or compartment and feed power to it there. I'm hoping that gets it close enough to transmit on to the monitor.

I think I'll temp wire it to the cat and then put the monitor in the truck and get a feed and start backing away until the signal is lost. That will tell me if it works or not before I go through all the trouble of crawling under the cat for nothing.

I'm hoping to do this on Saturday and will let you all know what I find.

I couldn't wait. Hooked up the camera to a battery in the garage and put the monitor in the truck. I got a signal although it was weak and cut out a few times it did work. It was not line of sight and when I measured it there was 45 feet between the two.

I figure when I mount the camera on the cat and put the transmitter as far forward as possible I should only be about 25 feet away from the monitor.

This of course is with my 28rlse.

I'll mount it on saturday and recheck and give another update.

Dave,

Good luck with the install. I'm curious to hear the results. Remember, take lots of pics!

Looks like the install is gonna have to wait for a while. Gonna be too cold this weekend to do anything and then we're expecting ice for Monday and Tuesday.

I'm trying to figure out a less evasive way to mount the camera. I'm thinking about mounting it to two suction cups and sticking it just under the back window. I would then jus run the cord through the window and plug into the receiver. I'll probably mount a cigarette lighter type power point in the island between the chairs and put a plug on the power end of the receiver. That way it's not a permanent install and it's easily removable to keep from getting damaged.

I'll keep you posted when I get the parts and pieces rounded up. I'll also take plenty of pics.

Suction cups ? I doubt it would make it over the first pot hole.
they'd dry up and it would fall off. couldn't you mount it on the ladder withou having to drill holes or something ?

You could probably mount a wireless system up on the roof of the camper and it would pick up from the truck ? You could run the wire through the vent ?

There is a cable from the license plate brasket to the receiver. That wire would be routed through the back window so even if it came loose you wouldn't loose it.

I don't have a back ladder on my Cat.

The wireless receiver has to be kept out of the weather.

I'm wanting it portable so I could use it for other things besides the Cat. I've even thought that you could stick it above the door of the cat with the suction cups and have the monitor plugged into the power point in the bedroom to keep an eye on what was going on outside or who was at the door when someone knocked late at night.

Just thinking outloud but I can see several uses other than watching the road disappear behind you as you drive to the next destination.

yep that would be some good use's. I see where your going with it now,,,, You'll be seeing where you've been Laughing Pun intended.

I've got a friend that works with a Think Tank group that comes up with a lot of the gadgets you see on " AS SEEN ON TV " ....
the last time I talked to him they were working on a rear brake light that was Wireless, the unit plugs between your trailer harness and the Tow V,,, then you mount the brake light up high on the rear or wherever you want to put it. the thought behind that was that the trailer lights on campers and utility / boat trailers are really low or obstucted by stuff hanging off the back,,,, So it would act like a third light on a vehicle. I gotta get with him and see where they're at with that. I'd like to have one myself.
I'll ask him about wireless camera's and see what kinda ideas he's come up with for those.

I came across a wireless camera at Advance Auto for 100 bucks,,
I found it on the net for 69 bucks,,,,
On the package at the store it says it covers 70ft....
You can't tell if the signal will go that far , or if the camera will view that far. But on the package it says for boats and campers.

I haven't tried mine on the Cat yet but have on the truck and it works great. The only drawback if it is one is the monitor is too big. I purchased the one from Sams club and in my truck there just isn't any place to put it that it's not in the way. As soon as I get time I'm going to install it on the cat and see if the signal will reach. I'm pretty sure it will.

I did buy some suction cups off of ebay and have them mounted to the monitor, camera and transmitter so I can just stick it and go. It makes it easy to remove and move to another vehichle if needed.

Well I tried it this weekend with mixed results. I could get a picture but it would come and go. I think if the transmitter was closer to the front of the cat it wouldn't be so bad. I'm not sure if you could just lengthen the wires though.

Hi Dave, well I tried a wireless on my last 5ver and it wasn't worth the time it took to install, I'm installing a new "wired"camera...this weekend, I've already tested at 50' and its perfect. I did have to do A little engineering, but it really turned out to be a clean install, i'll get some pics posted
