Texas – Grand Prairie - Loyd Park

This is a very well kept municipal park. We stayed there soon after we bought our trailer, and again a few nights after we moved from Oklahoma to Texas. Loyd Park is located on Joe Pool Lake, and many sites have water views. There is a large beach. The restroom and shower facilities, which are convenient to all camping areas are clean, private, and modern. There are some fully furnished park models that are available. There are no permanent residents, except for a few park volunteers. The park is gated and campers and picnickers must register and pay a small fee to enter. Campers pay the fee just once during their stay.

That last picture looks a little smelly....

I see more and more skunks in middle georgia , mostly just to the north of Milledgeville where I'm at.....

I've never seen one in the woods' just ran over in the road....

Each morning, about the time we finished our breakfast, the skunk would come out of a little clump of shrubs and walk across the street about 25 feet from our 'Cat. Then he would come behind the trailer and go into that tall grass that's right behind him. He'd rummage around in there for a while, then head back across the street to the shrubbery. It was like clockwork. We called him Pepi LePhew. We, of course, stayed in the safety of the trailer, and hoped nothing came along to upset him.

That wasn't our first encounter with a skunk. A skunk came within a couple feet of the door of our tent with our then 5 year old daughter sleeping inside. It could have gotten nasty, because several adults were sitting at a table just a few feet away. Fortunately, the skunk passed on by without slipping through the door of the tent, and without noticing 6 or 7 petrified and very silent people at the table.

We had raccoons climbing up a tree once right outside the window of a TT we had back in the 70's. They just hung there and looked in at us. Kind of like they were the spectators and we were in the cage.

That's one of the things we love about camping - the wildlife.

That's one of the things we love about camping - the wildlife
.

Next time you and scruffy are back down toward FL.....
Ya'll need to make a detour over to Okeefenokee Swamp....
Folkston , Ga... Its just off I-75 by the FL line.....
Its a big cypress swamp ,,,,,,, Take one of the pontoon boat rides through the swamp or if your daring....
Do a Canoe trip over night and stay on one of the platforms....
This is a Birder's paradise..... Sand hill cranes etc......
I stayed in there a Week years ago by myself to shoot some video... Did one of the big canoe loops ,,,, when your alone out there you can sneak up on all kinds of wildlife and get to see some interesting stuff.....

Theres usually a Racoon that hangs out on each of the platforms at night.... if you don't lock your cooler down they'll open the lid and have a party....

I had a pidgeon that hung out with me on one platform one night...... he would get in the canoe and just wouldn't leave me alone..... he was like somebodys' pet that flew in or something.
You leap frog from platform to platform that way you never see anyone else on the canoe trails.... it looks like Land of the Lost in the middle of the swamp.....
Well worth the trip if you've never been....

Never been. Won't say we never will, but probably won't. :) We prefer enjoying the wildlife from the comfort of our trailer or truck. We hope to see some when we're riding around in our rented golf cart at Fort Wilderness. We used to do a lot of hiking in the state parks where we stayed, but our old legs just won't allow much of that anymore. It's a good way to spot wildlife - gotta be quiet, though.

Phillip,

I grew up in South Louisiana and totally understand what you are talking about. We would tent camp in the Atchafalaya swamps. There is no telling what you would run across. You definitely feel you have become part of the food chain!

We got a chance to get away for a few days this week - Monday to Thursday. Loyd Park is just a few miles from our home and is very convenient. It seems to be many miles away from anything, but we could see Dallas from our campsite. In my original post at the top of this thread, I mentioned that campers pay the entrance fee just once during their stay. I was either wrong, or they've changed it. The entry fee is $10 per car if ANY occupant is under 65.... or $2 per person if ALL occupants are over 65. This is added to the camping fee for each day. The total for our site was $20.20 per day. All sites are paved and have water and electric, and there are two dumping stations.

Here are some more photos:
