California is going down fast.
I was born in California, and have lived here most of my life. What is really causing the economic downfall of California, is that there are more and more people using the services and less people paying for them. Each year, our Calif. government imposes more taxes and fees on those that support it. California for years has been trying to run off businesses by enacting laws that tax them to death. Two new laws that are on the books are to make all diesel trucks be retrofitted with smog equipment, and the other one is to make it mandatory for all home wells and septic systems be checked every five years "at a substantial cost". Both laws will create a huge government bureaucracy, that will be paid for by home and truck owners, at a time when or economy is in such bad shape. "DUMB". For some, it will be the straw that broke the camels back. For others, they will just leave California, lessening the people who pay taxes. If we were younger and working, we would move. This year 47% of the people in California voted for gay marriage. No moral values.....Very, very sad.....When it gets to 51% we are out of here. In our travels this year, we found a strong sense of values in the midwest states, unlike here in California. It will probably take us three years to sell all our extra "stuff" so we better get started soon. LOL...If we moved now and took everything, it would take a caravan of trucks, because of being a pack rat for the last 36 years.
One option is to rent out our house here and buy another house in another state.
What do you think about your states government?

My father in-law works in california frequently. He is currently in the oakland area on a job. He says the best thing about california is seeing it in the rearview mirror....lol. Talked to him today and he can't wait until christmas to come home to good ole' SOUTH DAKOTA
Granted we have our "4 seasons"....like today with -40 windchills outside and a ground blizzard taking place. On the other hand we have many other benefits. Like....no commutes, less traffic, less government, less taxes, good morals, values and work ethics. Wages might be less than other parts of the country, but the cost of living is considerably less too. We have two seasons of fishing...ice fishing obviously now and open water during the warmer months. Excellent hunting is found throughout the state. I have visited many other parts of the country and while I think they all have their atributes, I must admit, their is no place like home.

California is not for everyone. Lots of folks love it and wouldn't live anywhere else. CA has always been on the cutting edge of smog control. The mid west states are very nice and friendly mostly but it gets to cold there. Good Luck.

Georgia has its issues just like any other state. But I doubt I'd ever leave again unless I hit the lotto. For the most part Ga goverment does OK, But just like CaL The NO tax paying free loaders are killing us..... I'm all for the get rid of the IRS and have the fair Tax plan where no matter who you are your gonna pay some taxes...... I really think it would increase the tax collections by billions..... As in your taxes would actually be a lot less paying the fair tax way because so much more money would be coming in.......
I live in central GA, So I'm 3 hours to the beach and 3 hours to the mountains. The weather here is a full 4 season's. Not to cold ---can get a little to hot but tolerable. But when the pollen falls The pine trees and yellow pollen will kill you.....

maxtor,
The problems you are stating I am starting to see country wide. More people want to live off of the hard work of others. If this continues, it will be the downfall of this great country.

Re: California is going down fast.
California's weather is what many people live here for. Not to cold, very low humidity, close to the ocean, mountains, desert etc. Many years ago, it was a great place to live. Not anymore. We are fortunate that we can live anywhere we want. We need to do some research and see where we would want to relocate. Redding is about as nice a town as there is in California, so we are lucky to be here. There are many factors to think about when deciding where to live.
Yes, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, all are great places to live.
Mark; I am thinking you are right, in California, morals and values are falling like a rock.

Like Phillip. we too live in central (or northern/central) Georgia. We're still a "red" state, thank God. But we live a little too close to Atlanta (blue thru-n-thru) for my taste and wallet. Out in the country where Phillip lives is a lot nicer and easier on the pocketbook. I've always planned to get back into the mountains of Tennessee someday. HOWEVER, the family has just got back from a 2 week vacation @ WDW Ft Wilderness, and central Florida is lookin awful good right now!

I recently told someone who keeps hinting we should move to Florida that I wouldn't live there if someone paid me. That's true, but it hurt his feelings when I said it. I love Florida, but would like to keep it special by visiting often.
We're going back in less than a month. :)

I was born in East Los Angeles and reared in the San Fernando Valley. The California I knew back then, sociologically, was more sane. It was then, and still today, very hedonistic, perhaps even more so; but its financial problems today are magnified by the wholesale influx of illegal immegrants from Mexico.
There are no easy solutions for these changes; perhaps these are changes for the better. In my eyes, these changes are overly-focuses on the, "I'm okay, you're okay" concept.

Is fort wilderness awesome or what ? ,,,,,
Don't get fooled by the Disney illusion though.
I'm like tater ,,,, I'd rather just visit. I lived in Ft lauderdale a few years back in the 80's and it was great living on the beach. But,,, You never really get to know anyone. They move down for a year and leave. On the other side of that your always meeting somebody new. And in FL theres always a distinct dividing line between the good side of town and the bad,,,, Unlike around atlanta its spread out and you just have a pocket of bad hoods scattered about.
I've lived in Memphis, Ft lauderdale , atlanta, millededgeville, and no matter where you go its the Same old $#!+ no matter where you go. Just different scenery / people.....
And Maxtor the Gay Scene is in every town in the USA, You just might not recognize or see it right off.... You can't run from it , its been around since the early cave man...... in some era's they just get a little more vocal, it tones down a decade then they get loud again..... I myself don't really pay them much attention.
I've known lots of gay people in my life, but the one's I knew never seemed to push their lifestyle on anyone else.
I don't think i'd move based on what the gays are doing.

Re: California is going down fast.
Maxtor,
We like Texas. As far as state government goes, it's better than some other states we've lived in. We were both born and raised in Illinois, nuf said.
We don't have a state income tax, and in our little town near D/FW, our real estate tax is reasonable. We also don't have sales tax on food.
And, Texas has almost every kind of climate you could ask for. :)
We lived in Tulsa, OK, and loved it there. It was a great little city with a small town feel. We moved back to Texas when we retired because we wanted to be near our daughter.
If you have family near you, give a lot of consideration to how you'll feel living far away from them. If we didn't have our daughter, we'd be living in California near our son; but California definitely wouldn't be our favorite choice for a home.
Our health care is good, but I think California might have a better plan for older people. It was very good for our daughter-in-law's mom who had renal disease and had to have dialysis treatments three times a week.
Lots of things to think about before making a big move.

Re: California is going down fast.
I agree with Pickle 100%.
Phillip; yes, there has been gays since early civilization, immorality is not new. I have seen the push to brainwash people into thinking immorality is ok at all levels. What two people do in their own home, is not a problem. It becomes a problem when they try to force their imorallity on others. Without morals a country will crumble from within. Some of us who have been on this earth a long time have seen the changes, and they are not good. Yes "the gay scene" is everywhere, but so is Cancer.
Scruffy and Tater; Yes you are right, there is no perfect place to live. We are both retired and can live anywhere. We believe we live in one of the best places in California. There are many factors to consider before moving to another location. Yes, it is important to live near good medical facilities when you are older. It was so refreshing to visit Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, etc. where people were considerate, friendly and kind to each other. Out here we call killing babies "pro choice", and living immorally "alternate lifestyles". California is trying to dumb down the people into thinking that living morally wrong is the norm, and acceptable. Movies, Television, and the media have all been doing their best to promote this illusion.
Someday, you might be reading about some guy marrying his goldfish, and wanting full rights for the goldfish. Don't tell the aclu, they will sue for the goldfish's rights. I can see it now..... aclu sues for SSI disability benefits for spouse who can not walk.

Spent some time at the Persidio of Monterey back in my military days. It was truely beautiful especially the 17 mile drive. It was, however, the first time I saw a male with shoulder length hair! Wow have we seen a lot of changes since then. California may have been where change started but it's rampant everywhere now.

I will say that after our trip this past spring, I have a new outlook on California, we traveled up the east side through the Bishop area and we loved it. My whole life I have never had a desire to go to that awful place, but I am very glad I did. I will say that I probably will never go to the LA area, but the east side is great. I have lived in Erie, PA, Ft Lauderdale, FL in the 80's also, Columbia, MO, Springfield, MO, and now Southwest Arkansas. I would go back to Missouri in a second if there was a good job for a forester there, but Arkansas is surprisingly nice. My wife is from Ft. Lauderdale and she almost admits she likes it here. The summers get a little too hot, but the winters are mild.

Like you said, going up hwy 395 through Lone Pine, Bishop, Mammath, Bridgeport, are all very beautiful and have not changed much in the last 40 years. Also, along the coast from San Francisco north on hwy 101 with the beautiful ocean scenery and tall forests makes it a must see drive. It is the legislators and nuts that have made California a place to be from, and not the climate or beauty of the state. The Sierras, Trinity Mountains, Shasta and Lassen Mountains are a must see also.
The L.A. area east to San Bernardino, and north to Bakersfield are places that are good to stay far far away from.
For camping purposes the south, west, and central California up to Sacramento are places to stay away from. Just my opinion from living here for the last 62 years.

In the little over twenty years I spent in the Navy, I lived in numerous places. Grew up in Mesa AZ, spent time in San Diego CA, Chicago IL, Virginia Beach X 2, Philadelphia PA, Jacksonville FL, Boston MA, Newport RI, and Oxnard CA and retired here in Hampton VA. Everywhere we lived had its good and bad points. We liked something about everywhere, but disliked something as well. Taxes are everywhere and no community operates for free. I agree with Phillip, this country should just toss the IRS out on their ears and start using the Fair Tax. If you have never heard of it, go to Fair Tax dot org and read about it. There are a few books on it also. The thing I like about it the most, is everyone, I mean everyone will pay their share of the taxes. Every drug dealer, illegal alien, and thug who doesn’t presently pay taxes will pay their fair share.

Rob,
I agree with your points. With the fair tax, you could do away with the majority of the IRS, which would be a huge cost savings ( does the govt know what a cost savings is???), plus everyone would pay their "fair share"! So in the end, the middle class may see a tax reduction and the govt, because the IRS is no longer around, would probably see more spendable capital! A win-win proposition!!! This is exactly why we will never see it. Have you ever heard of a govt entity being disbanded? How will all the tax lawyers make a living???
I am getting more cynical as I get older!

I don't look at it as being cynical, I look at it as learning how politics works.
Hmmm politics and work,,,, isn't that an oxymoron.
Still we have the best country in the world, it just needs to be fine tuned.
I should have said it needs a major overhaul. It is beyond the fine tuning stage.

I agree, we are way past the fine tuning stage and are heading into the major overhaul stage. I hope we have enough time to turn this beast around.
