Propane Regulator Noise

Propane Regulator Noise
I have a 30' 5r. When it is cold & the furnace fires the propane reg will setup quite a loud hum. This hum will wake me at night. During this loud humming if you touch the piping be either of the 2 tanks there is a heck of a vibration. If the tank selector position of the 2 stage reg is changed even to where it is drawing form both tanks at once the only thing that happens is a change in noise pitch. There is a reg on the road side tank & then the two stage reg by the other tank. Has anyone else had this problem & if so what was the fix. I am leaning toward replacing the 2 stage reg. I also will chk the psi rating of the hose from the road side tank & if high pressure an thinking of removing the reg form the road side tank.
This noise will get your attention.
Thk's for the help

Re: Propane Regulator Noise
I had to buy a new one, and the road side is 30psi I think. Mine went bad and was linking out of the safety hole so I took it off and did not replace it. I talk to a lot of guys about this and got a 50/50 on it. I had trouble with it 3 times so I took it off.

Re: Propane Regulator Noise
Timflood; Thk's for the reply.
I chked the hose from the road side tnk & it is LP listed hose to 350 psi. I am thinking of removing the reg from the road side tnk. Before I do this I am going to chk on pressures on the LP system in 110 deg F weather. Another thought is to replace the hose with sched 40 black pipe through the basement & then go hose to the tnk & 2 stage reg. I am a little concerned about having hose running through the basement & under high pressue most all of the time. I use my RV most every day except the wk end. So at this point I am leaning hard toward the sched. 40 black pipe.

Re: Propane Regulator Noise
After doing a little research; I am gong to take out the hose & install 3/8" ID type "K" copper with flare fittings. This will give some flex for installation & also for vibration when towing & allow for removal of the reg on the road side tnk. I am also going to install a new 2 stage reg.
Also some food for thought; with a outside temp of 20 deg F a 30# bottle of propane will support a total of 66,000 btu. So if you are running a furnace, generator, water htr. & stove all on propane guess what!

Re: Propane Regulator Noise
Gotta question for people.
Is there a device that will monitor the pressure in the propane line? Specifically I'd like to put something, at the cooktop maybe, to create an audible alarm for low pressure.
My reason? I'm currently in an old 5th wheel where the furnace doesn't turn itself off when the pressure drops. So it will just run the fans for hours, assuming I don't wake up in the dead of the night, pumping drips & drabs of unburnt propane out the exhaust as it attempts to fire until the tank is absolutely empty. I know this because it ran out one day and I wandered around trying to find the propane leak until I got to the furnace exhaust. My 05 28RK furnace will shut off if the pressure drops.

Re: Propane Regulator Noise
I bought 1 of the LP GAS MONITORS, it works good on my little tank for the BBQ, but its too big to fit between the coach tank and the hose connector. The hose will not bend enough to connect onto the gauge.

Can you hum a few bars and we'll guess the tune? Sorry, couldn't resist.

I didn't know this was possible.
I have heard regulators that make noise before; it seems like you should be able to isolate the noise to one or the other and replace it.

I am able to do this 2 ways; the first which, you will I am sure, will like the best is "Solo" - so low you can't hear it or the next option is "Tenor" - ten or twenty miles away

Yes; with the selector pointing between the left & right tank or straight down gas draw will be from both tanks at the same time.
Makes no difference which tank is selected or shut off. The only things that change is the severity of the vibration & pitch of the noise.

Re: Propane Regulator Noise
Received the March 2010 Good Sam Highway magazine today and the problem with squealing or whistling sound coming from the propane cylinders was covered under TECHtopics. They say the problem is with the back check. They also stated "A common location of this back check is just inside the Type 1 connection". They suggest changing the brand of pigtail. Hope this helps. Stanford: That is one of the first things I tried. The reason in my mind for this change was the vibration. But to no avail.
