When a sink is not used for awhile, the trap dries up. That is the u-shaped plumbing under the sink drain. One of it's purposes is to stop sewer (or holding tank) odor from coming back up the drain. It does this by staying full of water and blocking the passage of air. If it dries up, there is nothing to stop the odor from coming up. Just need to run some water down the drain to fill the trap.

We had an odor that was almost sickening that we couldnt figure out while in the cat for a week now.
I scrubbed the trash can area, only to find out it was the vent for the galley tank releasing odors.
The vent is located right next to the hot water heater in the back of the cabenet under the sink.
We poured some boiling water and some clorox into the drains, i dumped my galley tank and put some septic tank chemical in to see if that helps.
I cant beleave they vent that sink out under the cabinet.
The DW just told me she washed and cleaned some shrimp in that sink yesterday, im sure that was the odor. The hot water and bleach should do the trick.

bags,

Our '04 29BHBP is plumbed the same way. Is there a cap with an integrated check valve of sorts on top of the vent?

Max, Yes there is.
The hot water, bleach, baking soda (3 diffrent applications) seem to have done the trick for now.
