Draining the freshwater tank on a 30 LOFT

Post by afdbigdaddy on Sat Jul 26, 2008 2:35 am

Ok, so I spent two days trying to find my drain for my freshwater tank on my unit. The owners manual stated to find a quarter-turn valve to drain, although there wasn't one. The dealership had no idea and was absolutly no help at all. So, I have to painfully admit that my WIFE found it.

On the driver side, behind the rear axle tire there is a white tube and a blue tube with a grey cap. Undo the grey cap and the tank will drain. I spent hours under the unit and almost took the protective cover off to find it. Chalk one up to the old ball and chain!

I saw that underneath & "guessed" the cap covered the low point drain for the fresh water tank. Never got to test it yet (we rarely fill the fresh tank).

What do you think the un-capped line is for?

Wouldn't it be nice if Forest River provided an owners manual for their products?

The uncaped line is the vent. They don't run it up to the fill hole. Don't know why. Mine is doubled in half with a zip tie around it. I asked about it when I picked up the cat and they said it would work fine that way.

We haven't used the fresh water tank yet and probably never will.

The uncapped line is for the overflow. When the fresh water tank is overfilled the excess will come out of that line

Just wanted to reply to afdbigdaddy to see if he used the black tank flush hook up yet?
"attempted" to use mine for the first time Sunday and when the DW turned the water on it filled the hose nicely and then started to spray the entire basement of our 30LOft!!! only found out when the water came out the shower compartment! I hate when that happens..........
Other than that, LOVE the 30Loft!

Bryan,

Sorry to hear of your flood. Unfortunately, the fittings do come loose at times. Its a good habit to check them every once in a while.

when I flush my black tank , which is all the time when camping, I always open the basement door and check for leaks cause I too had one, but it didn't flood out the basement.

I use the flusher to put water into the black tank, remember, ALWAYS keep the black tank water level at 1/3 full after dumping. This keeps any mounds of you know what from building up.

Here's another tip for the black tank flusher. Be sure to use a water pressure regulator on the hose you hook up to the flusher. Many people will use a regulator on their fresh water connection but fail to use one on the flusher.

I went thru the same thing, figuring out those two hoses. But I have another question ...
My manual (and I was the term "manual" loosely), also talks about a "low point drain. The basic drawing of the water configuration shows it as well. Any idea where to find this drain? Does it exist anymore?

Thanx,

On my Wildcat the low point drains are located by the steps under the frame. You actually have to get on your hands and knees to see them. This is how I drain the water heater and standing water in the lines for winterizing the fifth wheel.

my low point drains are in front of the steps also. and yes, I have to get under the trailer to see them to. As far as the freshwater drain valve and overflow, they are quite obvious and hang a good 8-10" below the trailer. They are both white hoses, one is open on the end and the other has an 1/4 turn valve on it. They are pretty much in-line with the fill valve when facing the side of the trailer.

Hi Duke,
the basement door is just the access door to your storage area up front. On the street side (aka drivers side) you have the outdoor shower and tank flush fitting right next to the "basement door". Open the door and check for leaks when using the shower / tank flush for the first time. Good practice to check EVERY time. Beats flooding the basement (speaking from experience!).

Hope that helped?

Hi Duke,

Exactly what Schleprock said. Your basement is the area below your bedroom. So you have 3 doors into the basement, 2 on the sides and 1 in the front.

Hope you like your 29RLBS as much as we do....

Ok, I thought you might be talking about that storage area. Some input as to the overflow/drain for the fresh water tank. I have had problems with wasp and such getting into areas like these and building nest. I used a inlet hose washer with the screen and put it over the drain hose. I had to wrap about two or three wraps around the drain hose to takeup the gap. The hose washer was not quite the exact size. Anyhow this will keep out critters and still allow the drain to function. I secured the washer with tape.
