Pay as you go Satellite TV Pkg
I saw a subject line on one of the camping forums recently about a satellite provider who has a pay as you go service geared for RVers. But do you think I can find it again???
Does anyone have knowledge of such a pkg?

Dis Pay as You Go
Dish has the pay as you go _ BUT be careful.
If you use the dish prepaid card - you must use it all once you turn it on
By getting a Green Dot prepaid card from places like Wallgreens, you can state how many days you want service. It will only work with the Dish 301 receiver.
I ordered the new receiver and dual LNB kit for $99 and am going to try it. I'll post my results when I get thet thing working. Here is an excellent write up on what you need to do.

I ordered the new receiver and dual LNB kit for $99 and am going to try it. I'll post my results when I get thet thing working. Here is an excellent write up on what you need to do.
"1. Buy a Green Dot money(Make sure it is a green dot money pack) pack at Walmart/RiteAid/CVS/etc... and load it up with the amount that you want(from $20 minimum to $500 Max). There is a $4.95 service fee when the pack is originally bought, so add that in.
Also bear in mind that after 90 days if the full amount is not used(they expect you to put the amount towards a prepaid credit card or bills before that, so I would recommend not putting more than $20 on the Money pack since you only want it for weekends on the boat) they will DEDUCT $4.95/month on the 91st day after its purchased.
An example would be if you bought it 1/1/08, then on 4/2/08(the 91st day) they would take away $4.95/month until the value is completely gone. So I would recommend the minimum amount($20) to be put on it until you see if you want more because you used it more, or not.
2. Get the receipt(this is IMPORTANT), and keep it with you. There will be an ACTIVATION NUMBER printed on it. You need this in order to activate the service(along with the Receiver number which can be found in the menu by going to option 6, then 1, then 3.)
I find the EASIEST/BEST way to do this is to is to put the Dish NOW/YA! Phone number(1-888-347-4132) at the top of a piece of paper, then the Receiver number(It is an R followed by 12 digits), and then the ACTIVATION NUMBER that was printed on the receipt where you purchased the Green Dot Money pack. This allows you easy access to all the info you need, and then you can just erase the old activation numbers/or scribble them out, and add the new one right below it. I also add the day I bought the card next to the activation # just so I know when the 91st day will hit, and therefore get that Money pack used up.
3. Then call 1-888-347-4132. This is the Dish Now service, and it is automated. You will use a combination of voice commands and typing in the activation/receiver numbers on the keypad.
For the first time activation, it will ask for a ZIP Code. Just give it one(your home one will be fine). It just wants to know where the receiver is being bought at/used. There are NO LOCAL CHANNELS or LOCAL SPORTS NETWORK available with this system(yet) so it doesn't matter which ZIP code you give.
It will ask for the Zip again for later purchases if you tell it you moved it to another location. Just don't. It doesn't affect anything anyway
I find TYPING the activation number and receiver number on the PHONE KEYPAD easier than saying it so there is no screw up. The prompt will repeat the above mentioned numbers back to you to make sure it has the right info.
4. Now you get to ordering the programming. The prompt will ask you what type of programming you want: Basic(AT Family, AT100, AT200, AT250), Movies(HBO, Stars, Cinemax, or Showtime), or Adult Channels(2 different types).
Choose which one you want. Let' say "BASIC" for now.
Say "BASIC", then you will be prompted to which one you want. Let's say AT200.
You will then be told that, you can get up to 20 days(this is just an example by the way. It will vary based on the amount on the money pack) of this programming.
You will then be asked, "Would you like to use the full amount of your money pack towards this purchase?"
Say, "NO".
You will then be asked by the automated machine how many days you would like.
Say 1, or however many days you wish(up to the max amount allowed of course).
The prompt will then repeat the number of days you said back to you and ask, "Is this correct?"
Say, "Yes" if it is. If not, say "NO." Then just repeat that step again.
It will then say fine, and tell you it is sending the signal to your receiver
For just the Weekend, I would recommend asking for 2 days. This should get through the entire weekend if ordered on Friday(definitely if ordered on Saturday).
After your purchase the voice prompt will ask you, "Will there be anything else?".
If you say NO, it will say thank you and disconnect.
If you say YES, then you will go through the above ritual again, but then you can add more programming(movie channels or Adult) each time.
You can only do one thing at a time(like get HBO, then go throught the whole process again just to get Cinemax or whatever).
The process can seem tedious, but it is worth it IMHO.
YOU CONTROL EVERYTHING.

Keith,
Sounds like a great way of getting satellite feed without a huge financial committment. I'll look forward to your opinions.

I don't do pay as you go...
because I bring the Dish and the receiver with me from home. Initially, we thought why would we want to bring *that* much of home with us, and for a time that was OK. That was until we had to clear out of Houston because Hurricane Rita was bearing down on us in 06. I won't go into the gory details but 21 hours later we found ourselves at one of our favorite places, Fort McKavett about an hour away from San Angelo. We were curious what was or was not happening to Houston and low and behold we raised our aerial only to find we had access to one freekin' channel. It wasn't one of the major news stations either.
At that point we decided that since we have 4 Dish receivers at the house, we would start taking one with us. We purchased the antenna and then it became an exercise to get it up and operating.
I grabbed what would have been a discarded pallet form work. Put the Dish antenna on it, marked where it's "feet" were going to go, drilled holes, and then for space reasons took the circular saw and buzzed the pallet in half. Shown here in the picture, and what is hard to see is that the Dish unit is bolted to the pallet and there are three 1 sq ft cement pavers holding it in place. Right now, this has been working very well us and the pallet and pavers keep this sucker grounded even in pretty modest winds. I have an in-line signal detector and being an amateur astronomer, finding the satellite isn't an issue and having the signal detector helps there as well.
The only thing we have to remember to do is make sure we call Dish and get them to "ping" the receiver about a week before we go. The last time we forgot to do this and went all the way to the campsite and had to call them from there anyway but at least from home they know the receiver is where it is supposed to be.
Now, what was of interest was that when asking Dish about the portability of their receivers, we got two separate answers. The stoic person in customer service on the phone suggested we needed to rent a "5th" receiver dedicated to the trailer. More $$ to them. However, when we spoke to the Dish reps at a local home show, their answer was simple "just grab one of your home receivers and take it with you" -- so that is what we do.
Now mind you... we take it now where ever we go. But since we are CAMPING, it is not our primary means of entertainment.

Re: Pay as you go Satellite TV Pkg
I've been trying to find a price breakdown for Dish's pre-paid programming pkgs on a p/day basis, without success. Does anyone know how much these pkgs cost using the pre-paid program? Keith, have you used yours yet?

Re: Pay as you go Satellite TV Pkg
Greetings:
I have used it twice and now I am in the mountains of Colo and using it for third time. It works great for me! This morning I could not even find a radio station so I flipped on CNN for the news.
The daily rate for the top tier programming (Americas 250) is about $2/day. I now only pay for what I use and when I use it, and once you get the process down it really is not very difficult. Hope this helps. TC, if you have specific questions just let me know.
Regards,
Keith

Re: Pay as you go Satellite TV Pkg
Hello All,
I just saw an Ad in my Good Sams magazine for DirecTv through Direct Sat TV.
If you sign up for new home service they will send you a free tripod, dish and 50' of cable for your RV. SInce I only need three receivers for home and you get four each month at no extra charge they sent me the fourth receiver to keep in the CAT. This way whe I go camping the receiver is already active and all I need to do is set up the dish and I have Sat TV.
Therefore no extra monthly charges and SAT TV whenever and wherever I need it.

Re: Pay as you go Satellite TV Pkg
I just purchased my Dish Now pkg. directly from Dish Network tonight and was told that as of 8-20-08 anybody with Dish service can aim both at the southern sky AND the western sky. I'm hoping that'll make finding their satellites a little easier.
Can't wait to get mine hooked up and try it out!!

Re: Pay as you go Satellite TV Pkg
For the first time activation, it will ask for a ZIP Code. Just give it one(your home one will be fine). It just wants to know where the receiver is being bought at/used. There are NO LOCAL CHANNELS or LOCAL SPORTS NETWORK available with this system(yet) so it doesn't matter which ZIP code you give.
Well that bites,,,,, I thought you could tell them where your at and get locals,,,,,,,,,,,
