Concertone "woofer"

Post by ScottandGrace on 3/6/2009, 11:49 pm

I can only hear the slightest difference in sound when I turn on the subwoofer in my ceiling.
Is that normal or should I get earth pounding, neighbor annoying, ear bloodying sound from it? I have to admit, I wasn't sure how a sub that's only 4" deep could make much noise but hey, anything is possible.

(I hope this works...)

It worked affraid
Yay - My first pic post.

Mine either. I think a lot of it depends on the DVD, CD, etc you are playing.

Mine kick's BUTT , but not until i went into the system and raised the the setting up to level 7. It was on 3 the same as the rest of the speakers so it all sounded the the same, my other half says it is to bassie but in the movie jurrassic park when the T rex shows up i raise it up to 10 just to shake the windows (and maybe just to annoy her a little) but after 27 yrs. of being married theres only so much I can still get away with, oyea just go into the settings and change it , GOOD LUCK cheers

So Mark, do you use the remote to make the changes?
I cant remember if I ever tried anything like that ~ I know I tried just turning up the bass but it didn't do much. Is there another adj?
I guess I need to go wake up the cat and check it out again. headbanger

BTW, funny you should mention 27 years together, Thats how long I've been with Grace too.

If you're talking about that button on the clicker, the one that there's no method to activate from the unit itself (a completely moronic design decision by someone who should be taken out in the woods for a lesson from somebody related to Tony Soprano) then yes, you should be able to hear the difference. Unless you have most of the bass tweaked out. We push our TV/DVD through unit, makes a heckuva difference when the furnace/AC kicks on.

Scott for starters i hav'nt adjusted it in over a yr. i have three surround sound systems in my house and 2 of them have a subwoofer adjust volume on the remote, the one in the 5er only has a treble and a bass and i have the bass set on 7 and the treble on 5 and it shakes the windows a little when turned up but during a good action pack movie i will kick the bass up to 10. when i wrote that i adjusted the subwoofer in the fiver i was wrong, it was the bass i kicked up, like i said it's been a yr. since i messed with it so i went outside yesterday and was shocked that the controller was'nt the one with the subwoofer adjustment, so kick the bass up throw in a good movie and see what happens , with my bass cranked up it sounds really good, but then again my wife says i never listen to her or i never hear her when she's talking to me , so maybe my hearing is getting bad thats why i crank it up so i tell her good luck

It is a decent enough speaker to be used as a woofer, however, it is not driven very hard by the amplifier. Most separate woofers have their own power supply to drive them -- the 'Cat's does not.

My woofer bit the dust over the winter. All I get out of it now, is cone vibration and LOTS of distortion!!

Looking at Concertone's website, they don't cost much to replace. Not a high dollar item to begin with; but, considering the source...

I'm kind of looking forward to the day my Concertone pukes. I'm looking forward to reworking the cabinet and installing a descent car stereo. I could even install a small sub under the dinette.
It sure would be fun to see the wifes reaction to that affraid

I wish I could remember if I saw this on this site or another one. If it is a repost from here I apologize. Anyhow, I am assuming that mine will quit someday. Ran across this Jensen Stereo. It does all that I need it to. We spend most of our time outside so any connection to a TV isn't necessary. The radio is on all the time for us. I know that Panasonic makes one also, can't find it though. Have seen it in other units at camper shows.

I'm pretty sure you posted it here awhile back about the Jensen, But I'm glad you reposted the link, I might be interested in that one. I'd like to have the ipod connection.

Avid,

If memory serves me, the Jensen unit wasn't avaliable yet when you first posted info on it. Looks like it's available now though.

Interesting, That sounds like a good deal for a 12v TV and Concertone for $800 when separately, they are over $1,000. I wonder what the quality of the new ZX690 is compared to the older 500 series unit that is in my trailer. They seem pretty confident going direct to consumer rather than only selling through manufacturers. Consumer electronics are brutally competitive, so I hope the quality is better. I'd be interested in the quality of the 12v TV, we boondock every now and then, so having a 12v TV would be a plus.

Not sure I would be willing to give them another chance.

I use an inverter and AC powered TV; works fine.

I'm with Scott, they've lost my vote of confidence. The only thing I'd be remotely interested in, is buying individual components, such as the woofer, to maintain what I've already got. Even then, I'd have to think long and hard before pulling the trigger for an on-line purchase from them.

There are a couple of things I noticed when working on my dishnetwork connection. There are distinct positive and negative wires for each speaker. If they are not connected correctly, and most of mine weren't, they sound like bird sh_t. Also when we picked up the red standby light stayed on all the time. Pushing the power button on the unit or the remote did not work. Removed the unit, unplugged the power cable, waited a minute and plugged it back in. Then it worked. Kind of like rebooting your computer. I wonder if Concertone is made by Microsoft.

I wonder if there are any computer-use subs out there that run off a XFMR that operate on 12 volts? That would be a cheap improvement!

After 4.5 months of being stored, my Concertone wouldn't power up. I thought it bit the dust already. I pulled the fuse marked radio in the power converter for a few mins, put fuse back in and it fired up. Trailer was at the dealer for that whole time, so I don't know if the battery was left to run dead or if they unhooked the battery. So I really can say if a dead battery caused it to "lock up" or not.

In other words, I know there are inexpensive speaker systems (including sub woofers) that you can get for your computer and I wonder if any of them run off a "brick" (XFMR). The brick may be supplying 12VDC therefor I could use one those subs and power it with 12V from my converter/battery instead of using the brick.
