Tinting the windows.

Post by Big Dave on Fri May 02, 2008 1:44 am

Took the Cat this morning to get the windows tinted. I bought off the lot so I didn't get it with alot of the things that people order them with. I have the 27 rlse which is the cheapened version and comes pretty bare bones.

I had all the windows tinted with 5%. It's dark. We love it but it might be too dark for some. Cost me $457.00 and I think it was money well spent.

I've done several other mods like Skylight over the shower and stuff. As soon as the weather straightens up and I can get her washed I'll take some pics and show what I've done to customize/personalize.

We tinted ours last year. Very time consuming, but well worth it. We did all the windows except the kitchen, we ran out of film. tongue

I did the bedroom windows a couple of years ago, would like to do the rest, but DW doesn't want to.

I am planning on doing the bedroom windows this week some time. Any suggestions? I was going to go as dark as possible.

I bought the kit from Home Depot, came with a squeegee and a razor knife. DW has a soft pad for cutting material and a round roller knife. We used this to cut the tint before it was installed. Hardest thing is cutting the round corners. Find a bowl or something to use as a pattern.

Spray the glass with window cleaner, we used the Windex with vinegar, have them real wet, then put the tint on and move it into place, then squeegee all the Windex out.

I made a cardboard template of the window and used that to cut the film - I actually made two templates and left them between the tinted window and the day/night shades because I didn't want any light coming in and because of the window tint you cannot see the cardboard.

I went with the darkest they had, 5%. It might be a little too dark. Haven't been camping in it yet but just going in and out while piddling on it takes time for the eyes to adjust.

Best part is if your outside you can't see a darn thing. You have to get right up and cup your hands around your head and then it's still hard to see in.

Sounds like a big project. Might be one of those worth hiring out. I was never real good at that window tint stuff.

Got the bedroom windows done Thursday evening, wow, what a difference. I got some 2.5% from Wally world (I hate to admit I went there). I had a bit of difficulty cutting the rounded corners, but overall, came out good enough for our trip in 2 weeks.

I used to think the same thing. But since they do keep the gas / diesel prices 30 to 40 cents cheaper than other stations around town, I kinda have a different view.

Matter of fact, had some bad weather roll through that knocked out the power. 3am this morning I finally broke down and went and bought a generator to keep from loosing everthing in the fridge, Where else can you do that at 3am ?

enough said, lets don't hijack the thread hunter
