Stone Mountain CG, GA Info Needed
Booking a vacation at Stone Mountain Park Campgrond in Georgia for this summer. We have been to the park but never stayed at the CG. I do know the condition of the CG, reading the previous posts, but was wandering what campsites were the best. 291 looks the best, but was wandering if any were better. Or if they have a newer section maybe? Most sites look really tight. And with kids, I hate to be packed in like sardines. Just need my space, LOL. Thanks for any comments.

Re: Stone Mountain CG, GA Info Needed
James,
I am sure you saw my post from our trip last summer. The one place you don't want to go is down trail "O". We had origonally reserved space 387 I believe because it was all they had available. We got lucky and was able to upgrade to 291. The road to 387 was aweful. If I would have had to take my camper down the road I would have been very very upset. It had large pot holes and the pavement was broken. The Trail "L" is decent but the spaces are close. The space I had was Ok we had a concrete pad and picnic table. I had room to leave my truck in front of the camper as well. There wasn't alot of room in the back or behind me at all but I didn't need much either. I backed in as far as I could go to give me the room in the front. The other thing is backing in or pulling out. As the pictures show with cars parked beside the campers coming in its tight to get in. I had the curve in the road so pull up and back straight in. The only issue I had was when I left pulling out of the Trail onto the road the back of my truck bed was hitting the underbelly of my camper because I was going uphill and pulling out on the flat road. I was able to get it out with no damage but I was sweating bullets for a few minutes. I have since raised my hitch one notch just in case. Its a decent CG but to be honest we didn't spend much time at the CG. We went to the park one whole day and went to downtown Atlanta to the aquarium one day. The aquarium is a must if you haven't been there. There's also the Coke museum and underground Atlanta (shops underground). Good Luck! Let me know if you have any more questions. I wish my wife had taken more pictures of the campsites. She didn't follow my instructions!!!

If you don't mind staying off site, Lake lanier has some awesome campgrounds on it that are just up the road. Large water park also near the campground. if thats of interest let me know and I"ll give you more details on which one to stay at.

Jonathan- Thanks. Yeah, I had seen your previous posts and pics. I was hoping that you would chime in. I guess we have two choices, site 291 or the loop near the pool. We were hoping to find the site with the most space. Thanks. Morganton is no heat wave this winter, uh? We are just about getting tired of all of the snow in Boone. It's been a cold and snowy winter. Can't wait to go to Atlanta this summer and complain about the heat. LOL.

I've been trying to avoid the place but may have to go in May with my girls scout troop. Or we may opt for the hotel in front of the carving. we've stayed there before and its really nice.
I don't understand why they're not improving the campground.

Phillip did you make the reservations online or by phone. I need to make one to take my g-son and two friends busy for a week. 3 boys will eat anything you put in front of them. Tks.

Re: Stone Mountain CG, GA Info Needed
I will have to take the advice of the office, when I call to ask if site 291 is better, or is the loop near the pool/office has more space/privacy? I guess we are going in the scorging heat of July. But with it currently 12 degrees and still snowing, I won't complain one time. LOL.

Re: Stone Mountain CG, GA Info Needed
I called by phone and made the res. I asked the guy ( work camper ) i'm sure, when they were going to pave the roads. He just snickered and said they've been talking about it forever. I asked why don't they just take up the pavement and put crush and run down, he said they'd talked about that also. He also wishes they'd hurry up and do something.
