Grand Canyon camping with a pet.

Post by Maxtor on Sat Apr 19, 2008 8:27 pm

We are getting close to starting our trip around the USA, and we found out that the Grand Canyon National Park Service will not allow pets in RV's that are left alone. We had planned on taking a helicopter ride over the canyon, and they do not allow pets on the helicopters, so we would have to leave Luke in our WC. So the solution is to stay at the Cameron rv park which is about 59 miles away. The trailer village campground is inside the Grand Canyon National park. They do have kennels, but we had a bad experience with boarding one of our dogs in a kennel years ago. Another option is to pay someone to baby sit while we fly the canyon, but that would not be a sure thing. We will give campground reviews as we head east.

Hi Maxtor,

We stayed at Williams / Exit 167 / Circle Pines KOA when we were there. VERY nice place, and it was about 6 miles away from the Canyon also.

Be sure to get your National Parks pass at the first National Park you go too. Its $80.00, if your over 62 you can get it for $10.00 and this one is for a lifetime.

YES PHILLIP, another KOA....

Now I never said anything was wrong with a KOA, I just suggested that you try a State Camp Ground. Wink

Maxtor , Try and CAll the helicopter people and see if they would let you keep the dog in your own crate in one of their back rooms or something. Is your dog crate trained ? Or the receptionist may not mind watching your dog for you . just a idea.

Hi Tom;

I checked and the Circle Pines KOA is about 60 miles from the Grand Canyon. We thought about staying in Williams and taking the train to the Canyon, but it is a 5 1/2 hour turn around. That would be to long to leave Luke alone in the WC so soon on our trip. Taking pets camping is a challenge, but he is family, and his needs are most important to us.
We have the Golden Age Passport, which is good for any National Park. I guess being old, has it's perks once and awhile. We got it three years ago... Let's see now 62 + 3 = 39

No,,, Luke has never seen a crate. He is 65 lbs. of muscle. He thinks he is Man o War.
We have two acres here , and when he is outside the inner fence, he takes off running as fast as he can around the whole property. The only thing you see is a cloud of dust. But when inside, he can quiet down and go to sleep in a heartbeat.
It would be nice to camp closer to the Canyon, so we will see what we can do.

You could drive the 60 miles in an hour each way. Here is a place in Williams that offers pet day care. Canyon Pets

There are other places out to the east (Tuba City, etc), but they are no closer than Williams and I don't know of any campgrounds.

Thanks Scottz;

We will take a look at the Canyon Pets place. We would like to take the train from Williams, because we have heard good things about it. We are coming in from the North, so the nearest campground east or south of the canyon is around 60 miles. There is the Village campground in the Grand Canyon, but like a said earlier, they will not allow pets to be alone in a rv.
Thanks for your suggestion, it might be the best for us.
