Doug;

What do you like to do on the water? I live in SE MN and grew up in SE WI. I have learned though that my tastes in campgrounds are not the same as many here. I lean towards state parks and COE campgrounds, privacy and undergrowth between sites. I need electric but can get by without full hook ups.

There are quite a few COE campgrounds on the Mississippi River in WI and MN. You can find info on COE facilities at Corps Lakes Getaway

There are a lot of state parks in both MN and WI on water. Try MN DNR and WI DNR.

Let me know if there is any other info I can provide.

My son and I are fisherman, although my wife and 15 yr old daughter don't really share that interest..so I need a little of both worlds, I was looking at Peninsula park in Wi at Weborg point. I might be too late for this year. I spent several vacations as a boy at Lake Kapatogama but that was 40 yrs ago. We have reservations at Peninsula state park in Florida for August so we may have to wait till next year to head north

Penninsula is a great choice! You'll want reservations here, its a popular park.

Here's some more alternatives...

Northern highland/American Legion State Forest in northern WI has tons of lake front sites. Fishing is excellent, but there's no improvements on the sites (no electric/water). Like Glen, this is my kind of camping, although I don't fish a lot. Last summer I pulled into one of the CG's here around 8pm on a Friday night, with no reservation, and still got a prime lake front site.

Heading more towards SW WI, Gov Dodge St Park is nice, with a couple lakes and CG's, with good biking, hiking & horse trails. Fishing not quite as good, but it has electric hookups. Its a large state park, over 5000 acres.

Heading over Glen's way, we've stayed at Wyalusing, Perrot, and Merrick State Parks, all on the Mississippi River (WI side) and they're all nice too.

If you like the private, resort type CG with pools and kids activities, there's a Yogi Bear just west of here near Fremont, its pricey, but is on a lake (with OK fishing) which joins to the Wolf River which you can boat down stream a long ways to a number of other lakes with better fishing. They have a pool, water slide, show kids movies after dark (like an outdoor theatre) mini golf, etc.

Hope this helps. If there's something more specific you're looking for, I would be happy to help you too.

RichGeorge mentioned a number of the places I like also, especially Wyalusing which may be my favorite spot in the whole world (a bit of an overstatement as I have never been beyond the US and Canada).

My understanding of Peninsula State Park is that to get in there you have to be online at the WI DNR reservations website at about 12:01 am on January 2nd when reservations open for the year. There are some other state parks on Door County that are less popular.
